78 Cherokee rear axle differential

Hi,
the rear axle differential of our FSJ has been riped open and hence we are looking for a replacement.

The car is 78 Cherokee WT 4WD manual gearbox with AMC 360 V8, 5896ccm.
The diff Dana 44 Ratio 3,54 teeth 46/13. The outer cover is unfortunately also broken so we apparently need the whole thing .

Would be grateful for any offers.

I have a Dana 44 in a 77 J10. I would have to check ratio but I believe it would be the same. Problem is its in Canada. Shipping would be expensive.

Yep. I bought a 78 J10 axle to put into my 79 Cherokee WT and found the j10 chassis to be significantly wider. The spring perch pads are a full 3" wider than a wide track Cherokee. The rear axle brake Tblock is also on opposite sides (not that that really matters but FYI).

Good to know. Does not raises my hopes much anyway

I have found a part which I believe would fit (https://www.amazon.com/Motive-Gear-D...dp/B005AU6702), but I still need the differential cover, which is also broken.

Have you bought something from the aftermarket or an original part when repairing your diff?

My diff adventures documented here:
http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showt...=189790&page=2
Basically, I gutted the J10 Axle and cleaned everything really well, brought my factory Cherokee axle housing and the all the guts to a shop, and he rebuilt it for me including new bearings and shims. I sold the old axle housing for almost nothing ($20 I think)?

I am not an expert enough to know if those are the correct gears but they really look like they are.

The covers on these are pretty universal. I bet even there in Prague you could find one in a wrecking yard. If not, if you search for a "Dana 44 Cover" on any website, there are TONS of options from $25 up to a couple hundred.

I once harvested a 5 lug (d44) front axle from a wagoneer or Cherokee with passenger side diff to repair my front axle of my 73' j4000.

It was a 5 lug axle with drum brakes.
I still have the leftover parts including the differential parts!
Don't know the gear ratio , but can have a look and take pictures to show what it is and if it's useable for you !

Don't know for sure if a front and rear differential is different from each other!?
