Post new J20, new to Jeeps,

Hi, I just acquired a red 1986 J20. I'm the 3rd owner, it runs but has rust. I have never owned a Jeep and I honestly love this truck. I have always wanted a 78-85 wagoneer but the j-truck was in the right place at the right time.

However with two older diesel mercedes and a house renovation, I'm considering reselling (the rust scares me).

I have really enjoyed reading this forum. Any advice on either keeping the j20 or selling and waiting for a wagon would be greatly appreciated. I find myself quite conflicted.

I will post photos tonight.

Thanks --James

Welcome! Glad to see another Virginia guy on the board. How bad is the rust?

James - Welcome. If your J20 is red/orange and has rusty cab mounts, I probably talked to the PO about it too (and know roughly what your into it for). I was going to buy it for the axles/springs and convert my J10 to a 3/4 ton. My advice is to keep it and drive it while you look for a relatively rust-free J10 (or another J20) and use it for parts/upgrades.

You don't really want a wagon..... do you..... lol Again, welcome!

keep the j20, from what little i know it is heavier duty and responds to mods easier because its a 3/4 ton. Rust should not get you to worked up, it just gives it character. And by the way j trucks look way meaner than any waggy. I might be a little bias, but everyone has a agenda.

Hi, Thanks for the welcoming.

The rust is bad and seems to get worse every time i look at it.

Yes, the J20 is bright red and was for sale on craigslist. It has bad cab mounts, one is completely gone.

I have mechanical ability and feel like i could get it running well. However, getting inspected in VA with 3 rust holes in the floor boards in addition to the cab mount issues may be difficult.

Looks alone persuaded me away from my wagoneer dreams. Even rusty, this truck is awesome and the steering is better than any other full sized truck I've driven. It just might be too much work(money) to get the state inspection.

I'm posting a link to my flickr page for photo's until i figure out how to get them sized for the forum.

Get a hold of Jake and Jakes' Jeep Junkyard, he's got spares..... in TN near the BRP.

Check the vendor section for his handle, and email or PM him.

For a J-truck that has lived in VA that looks pretty good.

I have passed inspection many times with holy floors. The cab mounts might get you though.

I added more photos to the flickr page including underbody shots.

Good to know cab holes will pass inspection! Just need to construct an exhaust system, get the brake lights working and figure out the body mounts.

thanks--James--

Thanks for all of your responses.

I'm not familiar with Jake and Jakes junkyard in TN. How do I find it? I'm going to need a good junk yard in VA, or a parts truck.

Also anyone know a source for 86 seat belt latches. I'm pretty sure this truck was inspected at a honk and go station.

I Still think the 78-79 wagoneers are hot Sh%$.

Thanks again--James--

Welcome, James, thats a pretty truck, even with the rust. You will both love and curse at your Jeep. All of them (at least in my experience) have good and bad days, sometimes more bad. But, you'll realize that it's well worth it to have something that sets you apart from the rest of the crowd. As for your seat belts BJ's should have them, and most of what you need to get going again. Good luck and happy Jeepin.
