For the past 8 years, I've driven by this guy's house and have been eyeballing this Cherokee, parked in his driveway. Finally, I stopped by and inquired about it.
It is an '81, with power everything, CC, black interior (in really good shape for the age, black exterior (which has only surface rust, and 1 minor hole by rear window at drip rail. Suprisingly, the rear rockers and floor panels are rust free from what I could see from underneath), and a 2" lift. The Owner told me it has a 258 that threw a rod, which is why it was parked for so long. He has a spare low time 258 with a mild cam and CA smog legal fuel injection that he was going to drop in, but time and other priorities the "Jeep Sculpture" (as his wife calls it.... I like that name) has sat through time, waiting for a shot of energy.
I told him if he ever wanted to sell, I'd be interested. As it turns out, He does!
I snapped some pics, then hurried home and told my wife about it. Surprisingly, she was in! Since we only have room for 2 FSJs, and considering that we already have 2 J-10s, I'm going to have to sell or part out Old Ironsides.
It runs, but I am thinking of pulling the 'ol 401 out and dropping that in the Cherokee. Since we have to smog here, I'm trying to figure the most efficient and cost effective way to do that should I go that route.
I also have been lurking on All Of Craigslist, and Cherokees are so rare nowadays that most times there are none offered. I'm really excited. I want to do a full resto, but common sense tells me to just get it driving and work on it slowly. Well I read Strode's thread, and that was his plan to haha.
Hopefully I will buy this thing this week and tow it to my mechanic as I have no time (or experience) for an engine swap.
BTW, my nice J-10 is still my daily driver and has 20,000 miles since the resto!
