Edelbrock Pro-Flo EFI review

does anyone know how good an Edelbrock Pro-Flo EFI system works on an AMC 401? I'm interested in this kit, yet I have no clue on how much more performance it will deliver.
specs: AMC 401, probably 250HP currently, standard with special cam and Hedman Headers, manual tranny on 35's in a 80' J10.

any info or article is good. thanks,
dan

One of the Colorado FSJ guys had a GW with the Eddie MPFI. He loved it. Commented on easier starting, faster warm up, more responsive power. Gas mileage wasn't bad either. Not a super increase but IIRC it was in the 14-15 mpg.

To many other factors to involve there. To really get the most of it you would needa god dual exhaust, the edelbrock heads, etc. The EFI would only give you marginally more power than a correctly tuned carb. The thing the EFI would be better at is altitude change.

watch your timing. that system can get ahead of you.
the 250 is a really small cam you should be fine what is your compression ratio?

i noticed i lost higher hp but gained low end torque and driveability. for the price Howel TB injection netted similar power for my buddy on his 401 but the edelbrock is a great system i did not like the mallory distributor. i would have preffered an hei dist since the mallory gave some issues.

i had a big cam, 10.2:2 cr and aluminium heads with the fuel injection and it struggled to keep up at WOT but on the low end i couldnt beat it at idle it could pull a 12000lbs truck up hill without ever hitting the throttle

Pre programmed?

I saw this at PRI when it first came out and the Edelbrock guys were saying that you had to give them your engine specs and they would burn a chip for you. Is it still that way or can you change the parameters yourself? I know their Pro Flow for other engines can make really big power so I was wondering if yours is correct for your set up?

they still burn the chip for you

also you need fair vacum at least 16 inches at idle

I have this kit on a newly built 401 but still waiting on parts to finish install. I am hoping for a completion by mid November. Will let you know on power diff. but will be hard to compare to the old wore out 360. Shooting for around 400hp with all the goodies I put into it.

I have this system on my 360 that is bored .040 over, it is a sweet setup and runs really really good. I have a competition cam, 560 lift, 260 duration. 11:1 compression and venolia forged pistons, edelbrock heads, scorpion roller rockers and the edelbrock 150 hp nitrious made specifically for the MPFI. The computer setup is sweet and you can modify timing, fuel, idle, rev limter, etc. It also looks good.

Dan you might want to send a PM to BillyRB part owner of BJ's offroad, he has used or is in the process of using that system IIRC

Yep, I have the EFI installed on my 401 that I'm building. I haven't run it yet so I can't tell you specifics, but I can say that installation is incredibly simple, and the instructions / tech support have been super-helpful so far. I'll probably break the engine in on an engine dyno and do the initial tuning there. Then I'll install it, get everything buttoned back up, then do some chassis dyno tuning to get it all dialed in.

Very clean straight forward installation. 3 wires to hook up ...they did a great job with the wiring harness

Putting the pro-flo on a 250hp 401 would be like running Dana 60s with 31s. A simple TBI setup would net the same benefits and cost about a grand less.
