Thought some folks might like a gander at a period review by Peterson's 4x4 of a 1975 Chief 401.

Did I read right under "Trailer and RV Use" that these things can tow up to 7,000lbs when properly equipped?!??! I thought that sounded a little high??

Properly equipped would probably be the lower gears, tranny cooler, heavier springs & radiator to name a few. I KNOW a 401 can pull 7K.

They cleared ya for 7000lbs but what they called an "equalizing receiver" in the article we would call a weight distributing hitch. My hitch (from U-Haul) is class III/IV. Class III (5000lbs/500lb tounge) or Class IV (10000lbs gross/ 1000lbs tongue) with a weight distributing hitch. Am I going to rush right out and hook up to a 36' camper trailer? NOOOO! Not until I replace the 100,000 mile 27 year old springs. But I think the 401/TH400/QT/3.54axles (+ tranny cooler/four core/oil cooler/clutch fan) are more than up to the job. Just need the right springs.
P.S. They had similar reviews on Power Wagons/F-***s/Broncos/Blazers/Suburbans/Internationals and the like and the Cherokee scored at least a point better (often more) across the board than anybody.

Wow! I didn't think they could tow past 5,000 or so because of the short wheelbase and stuff. I figured a 401 and the TH400 could definitely get it up to speed and keep it there on inclines, but I figured the brakes and short wheelbase could cause some problems. Now I can boast to my friends that my Cherokee could keep up with the bigger 1/2 tons. Good to hear that the Cherokee also scored higher than those other trucks as well! Thanks for the article, Brin!

Jeepfreak,
Acrobat Reader 5.0 upgrade. The file was made in Acrobat 6.0, I think you need at least Reader 5.0.
Plasticboob,
The 11 inch rear drums are kind of a put off for hauling something that big, but I'm using trailer brakes. Wouldn't recommend even trying to haul another full size vehicle on a trailer with out 'em. Trailer tends to bully the Jeep around.
