Because there are a lot of idiots on this planet are using it incorrect and throwing it around like there can't be no harm done!

Wow, that wheel turned out great. Let me know if you find a source for that headliner strip. I'm in need as well.

In Today's News . . .

Working towards installing the dash.

Building it all up and fitting stuff first.
I was missing the glovebox latch part. So visited my buddy Dan...
And Wa-La! Got the plate and a light to boot!

This is from the backside of the dash looking at the latch plate/switch/glove box light before installing glove box.

Installed BJs plastic glove box.
It would be nice if they gave you enough attaching screws? Hmmm

Almost ready to go in...
I also picked up a tailgate window switch / defroster switch.
Mine had been modified and is not great. Now have to wire up the original switch.

Going to have to recruit some help to install this... But very close.

Note -
I have some factory production line books that shows most of the build sequence with detailed instructions.
This is how the dash was installed at the plant.

I just installed mine without help. Lotsa tape on the body and dash to protect the paint. Seemed the trick was to come in a little low since the walls taper in at the top.

In Today's News . . .

Added the Sirius XM receiver.
It is a stand alone unit that will work through a compatible radio.
It plugs into the back of the head unit (black plug far right on radio), then it's controlled through the radio.

It is at the far left in the pic... I am pointing to it.
I used double sided mounting tape to secure it.

I then drilled out the radio strap mount and fed the antenna fitting through the hole.
This will mount on top of the dash. Going to wait until it's installed to pick a spot though.

Next Up . . .

The carpet showed up today.

66lb box! I am sure the UPS guy was thrilled. It's all in there!

First off, the plan was to lay it out in the sun... It was 91 today.
It blends well with the driveway!

I picked the carpet color to contrast the Agate seats...
Don't want it TOO dark inside the vehicle since there is a lot of black in the plan.

Of course, being impatient, I HAD to see if wheel wells fit ok...

Then had to see if the side piece would fit over the ABS panel...

Might as well see if the main floor fits... and the tailgate carpet over the ABS too . . .

Might as well take the sub box out and trim the carpet around the mounting base ....

Put most of the pieces in place.. and started to do the front.
Decided it was too hot, and I was getting tired/dehydrated.
So I stopped there for the night. Don't want to cut a hole wrong.
carpet is expensive!

In Today's News . . .

Been tired and burned out the last few days, so little progress.

Small steps -

Cleaned up the dash badge. Now it's time to reinstall it.

Here is the double sided tape you can get at Painters Supply.
It is very thin, and ideal for reinstalling badges/emblems, etc.

It comes in narrow a narrow roll, so you need to add several strips.
Peel one side and apply.

Trim the edges with a razor knife, peel the other backing off, and apply.
This stuff is VERY sticky, get the position right the first time !!

Finished up some details on wiring as I prepare to install the dash.
I scavenged a working tailgate/defroster switch.
Test it, all good. So wired it in with the original connector.
A PO had changed to a modern switch and it wasn't pretty.

Cleaned up some other connections and grounds.
About ready to put the dash in.

You are making great progress!
A note on the Sirius antenna.. You should consider mounting it somewhere on the outside of the vehicle. I had one on the dash of my other jeep for awhile, but it lost signal a lot. Once I but some non-marring backing on the magnetic antenna and routed it outside the rig, it keeps signal much better.

I have to do the same for 2 antennas on my GW.. one of the Sirius and one for the GPS speedometer (seemed like a good idea at the time to get off needing to figure out the right gear for the speedo sensor in the transfer case..maybe it wasn't)

Dash and pad look great! The carpet kit came with different material that wraps around the side panels? Where did you source that kit?

XM Antenna: I want to have it outside...
BUT -
Would have to drill a good sized hole to get the connector through it.
I am unwilling to have a hole in the roof/body. Have worked hard to seal this pig up.
I did give serious consideration to putting up on the roof in the middle of the roof rack so it wouldn't show.
Only other option would be to try and route it out the tailgate, but the seals and tailgate window are a concern there.

As for the carpet kit, it's from BJs Off Road.
The side panels do have an edge material to wrap your panels.

Speedo input for new gauges... funny you should mention...

Today's project is to install and try out the Dakota Digital sending unit.
I have an old school Dana 300 and bought the one that screws onto the t-case speedo port and generates the signal.
3 wire hook up, power, ground, and signal to speedo.

OK, you win. You are right, I did some more research, the XM antenna needs to be outside.

It's killing me, but I got the drill out and intentionally put a hole in the roof.

UGH !

First I found a grommet in my stash, then drilled to match size. This was stressful...

Put some touch up paint on the raw metal edge, then added some silicone sealant around the edge.

Then I cut the grommet open in the middle, and forced the connector and wire through.
The connector is big enough to be a pita to get through the hole.

The installed the grommet and added silicone under the roof as well. Worried about leaks always !

Located the ant back by the rear courtesy lamp.
You can see the ant cable running up onto the roof support.
Then routed it all the way up to the dash area.

DONE.
Now to let the silicone set up overnight.
Then I will fill the center of the grommet with butyl to keep water from pooling inside the grommet.
Hope this doesn't leak !!

It's up on the roof, so most will never notice it.

More Details . . .

Installed the fuel filler neck assembly.

Looked at the filler routing.. no wonder it does not fill well.
The fuel must go uphill a bit at the tank??
Crappy design.

I am eliminating the cargo lamp switch up on the roof. I can't reach it anyway!
This is the cargo lamp from an XJ. It's the rear cargo lamp.
It had a push "ON" feature. I am mounting it on the driver side cargo trim.
It's extra light, and a switch to boot. Wired it in with the other lamps.

This is the speed signal generator. Tested and now installed.
It goes where the speedo cable went. Required to drive new speedo.

I used JK lights on mine. Same push on feature. I never thought about the XJ's. That hole for the antenna though.

Geez, THANKS BRAD! lol
I already feel bad about this, but for a 6K mile trip, I need radio . . .

Here is the "Final" product. Butyl added to make a "dome" so water will not collect inside the grommet.

BIG day today.. Graphics being put on ! Woot!

Step One:

Chero gets the first bath since coming home.
Surprisingly dirty for just sitting in the garage.

Then pull it into the garage so it's in the shade for graphics install.

( NOTE: click on the pics, and zoom in to see the true color. )

Does the wire have to come out the side of the antenna? Can't cover the hole with it and seal with butyl? I love that stuff.

The actual antenna is a magnet mount.

The wire has the connector sealed onto it. So, i had to make the hole large enough for the connector, and then the grommet.

It is STUNNING! Wow! The "AMC"s look super cool and slightly factory. I totally dig the black out in the roof rack! it looks so good in the sun! The tailgate with the Cherokee Chief logo looks so right!
