Bumper Chroming

I recently had my front (3-pc) bumper rechromed by a local shop. I know chrome shops are on the decline, and maybe gone in some states but the craft is alive and well in Northeast Tennessee. My results are terrific, but mostly the straightening work that was done is incredible. Even rarer than chrome shops are those with the skills to massage a dented bumper back into shape. I'm just looking for a way to get some front bumpers de chromed so they can get painted and the paint keeps sticking good!

I think the chrome shops use sulfuric acid for that. I've read that it can also be done with hydrochloride acid or even sodium hydroxide. When I was trying to strip my bumpers I used citric acid and found that the chrome separated from what I think was a nickle undercoat leaving a brushed nickle finish that would have been really nice had it not been for the existing missing chrome areas.
