power train swap questions need advice

I have a 78 cherokee chief WT 360amc th400 q-trac, I have been putting together gm drive train 350 (82) dana 300 stock. I will buy novak motor mounts and th4oo to dana 300 adapter. my first question is
should i look for the th400 with the short 4x4 tail or would the regular length tail be ok. secondly i ve herd of engine offset to one side or the other, is this for the drivetrain or engine clearance reasons.

thanks

What is wrong with your 360? I would run an amc 360 all day long over a 350. Cam it and fuel inject it and you would be well off!! You've already got a good trans unless you want overdrive.

Yeah the cost of rebuilding anything is expensive, but AMC's are a bit more. The prices of aftermarket AMC parts is going down though. Im just a guy who loves to keep the unique AMC power in the jeeps. Anyway, do what it takes to get your FSJ going.

Not sure of anyone to recommend up in Amarillo, but if you don't mind heading to Lubbock, check with Tiner Machine in Lubbock. When I talked to them last year about rebuilding my 401 short block, they had built some AMC's fairly recently, and the prices seemed okay to me. There used to be a guy in Dimmit that used to drag race with my dad in the late 60's and early 70's. He raced a AMX and had a machine shop. I really wanted to get him to build my engine, but last I heard, he had retired and moved to Plainview. Come to think of it you might check and see if Carrol Caudel (sp?) still builds engines in Amarillo.

Good luck with whatever direction you decide to take your build.
