I have a 1991 GW, 360 with 727. I just replaced the transmission mount, and the sound of the GW has changed.

With old transmission mount:
Engine and transmission rocked back and forth when stopped. It was most noticable in drive. No noticable noise coming from the transmission.

With new transmission mount:
Engine and transmission do not rock back and forth, it seems very stable. But now there is a noise that seems to be coming from the bell housing area, where the transmission meets the engine.

Was the excessive rocking, and now the new noise caused by some transmission problem?

Thanks for your help.

The busted tranny mount, which previously allowed the engine and tranny to move quite a bit, could have cause excess wear of internal parts in the transmission that resulted in excessive endplay or wear in the bearings and bushings that keep the internal components revolving smoothly. Now that you've put in a more rigid mount, the endplay or wear is more evident.

plus the 727 has only 2 support bearings to begin with, as opposed to a REAL transmission such as the TH400 that has 3

Update - I just replaced the engine mounts yesterday. Both of the mounts were broken. Now, instead of just a different sound, there is a vibration that rattles the dash and the driver's side door (I have the door panel off). This vibration is present when idling in drive and during initial acceleration.

Any additional thoughts? Is it most likely the transmission, or the engine? Since it is smoother at higher speeds, I am thinking it is the transmission.
