Can a guy still find out what his jeep was spec'd as?

I was watching Vice Grip Garage the other day (really great guy if you need tips on SBC's) and he found the original spec sheet for one of his cars while removing the gas tank. It got me wondering: is there a place where someone can go and find the original specifications for their vehicle? For more recent vehicles you can probably do some digital research and find out, but for the older ones... I'm guessing the answer is no, but it was a good thought I think. Maybe the VIN could tell me?

And i have answered my own question! kinda... I have found multiple websites that give the VIN specifications (engine, trans, model, year, and gross weight), which answers some questions, but not all. I still want to find the original paint color, what options it had, who owned it and where at, so on and so forth... maybe not the last part, but definitely the color and options. Having a full history would be AMAZING, but probably next to impossible.

Depending on the year model, you can get a few things from the VIN. It's the basic stuff, left or right hand drive, model number, GVW, engine and tranny types, wheelbase, production plant.

It will not tell you things like J10 Honcho vs Golden Eagle, Cherokee Chief vs S model, denim upholstery vs vinyl, etc...

And that's the stuff I'm looking for, sadly. Is there any other way besides having the spec sheet itself?

Nope...firewall VIN plate is it.
Owned a ton of these never found/seen a build sheet hidden in any of them.

There are codes of the firewall VIN plate and some info on them in service manual.

The records weren't kept like other manufacturers and many were lost/thrown out. They didn't even bother to stamp VIN#s on engine/trans. like big 3 either.
So I always LMAO when I see ads claiming numbers matching.

My #s match.
Block says 360, and odometer says 246k miles, which the body and mechanicals certainly confirmed.

As info to the OP, there is an engine build date M/D/Y which should match to soon-before the production date of the Jeep. Supposedly there are build date numbers on the axles too. On a V8, the build date tag is attached to the valve cover, which has obvious drawbacks. The sixes have the build date stamped into the block. Shown in the TSM.

What year Jeep is it? Jeep's own VIN tool gives me a build sheet for my '91, but I expect that's because it's Chrysler era.

Yes late models Jeep will give you one, however they have many errors.
According to Jeep my 90 had these super rare options

CACP Low Back Bucket Seats
DGHS 4-Spd. Automatic 36RH Transmission
EUA 5.9L V8 MPI Engine
NACS European II Emissions
SBAS Power Rack and Pinion Steering
TBCS Compact Spare Tire
TSRA P245/70R17 BSW All Season Tires

I was thrilled when I found out it had a fuel injected engine and 4spd auto transmission!
Must be why is got such phenominal MPG compared to other SJs

Hahaha! Yes, I think they recycle the option codes - I remember being thoroughly confused when I first got the sheet for my XJ about 10 years ago.
Still gives some interesting info though!
