constant tension clamps - edited

I changed all my caddy's coolant hoses recently, i reused the clamps- have had 2 leaks, one a minor seepage - but today the Damn upper heater hose on the firewall popped off on my wife whilst shopping. had to rescue her , it was a easy fix , but i want reliability not convienence...

What do you guys / gals think?

Steve

I like the old wire clamps with the bolt and square nut. I try to use them everywhere I can, but unfortunately I still have some worm clamps in use.

Generally replace the clamps with new when I do a hose change. The couple of bucks difference is worth the peace of mind

If you want quality worm drive clamps, Westlake Hardware has stainless ones. They are better than the cheap ones from the parts store.

more spring clamp questions

I have a question about the "constant tension" hose clamps in todays cars - I am old fart used to worm gear clamps.

1. the clamps must come in different "clamping force" right? you would not need the same clamping pressure for a radiator hose as you would a vapor hose....? or less pressure on a plastic nipple VS more on a metal one?

2. If so, how do you tell which clamp you need for a given hose?, is there a secret chart somewhere? the reason I ask is i replaced all my radiator hoses and re-use the old clamps - if i wanted to buy new ones how can i be sure i'm ordering the correct ones ?

I guess you're not an old enough fart. I remember the spring clamps from our '64 Valiant. Never worked on our older cars, a Hudson and a '49 Merc convertible he gave to the kids across the street where it got thrashed. Where's the weeping Smily? But I bet they had spring clamps.

Anyway, I think the screw clams became popular in the aftermarket because they're easy to work with and seem to fit a big range of sizes with a single clamp. Though they really don't fit properly unless the screw part has the correct curve. Spring clamps are self adjusting withe temp changes and can't be overtightened.

Does any car come from the factory with screw clamps? None of my unmolested cars have screw clamps except the Dodge on the intake hoses.

Worm clamps here. I never bought that the spring type self-adjusted for temperature or hose shrinkage or whatever. I always thought the factories used them only to speed things up on the assembly line. Probably cheaper too.
