Ok, so I just picked up my 1987 Grand Wagoneer for $2500, perfect interior, a little rust, but nothing too bad. Over all I thought it was a fair deal. I've had it for about a month, always wanted one. I've put about 500 miles on it since I bought it. I've run into my first problem.

I'm driving down the freeway about 70mph, and I notice that it's riding different. I pull off the freeway to examine everything and notice the the four wheel drive light on the dash is lit. Well I look at the lever to shift to four wheel drive and it's set to two wheel drive. I tried to get it out for four wheel drive, but to know avail. I promptly drove it home. A couple days later, I drove it around the block to see if I could figure out what was going on. And I noticed a clanking sound at low speed, once you hit about 35 to 40 it goes away. This all started right after I replaced to brake pads. don't know if it's related though. Now I have to warn you I'm not really the mechanic type (yet) although this is my project vehicle which I'm want to educate myself on.

What I'd like to do, is find out what I need to be looking for, and if it's going to be an expensive fix for the 4-wheel drive system, any suggestions on disabling 4 wheel drive manually until I can get it fixed, this thing isn't going much of anywhere for about a year or so, so not have 4 wheel won't be a big deal short term.

Any advice is welcome and appreciated.

Thank you in advance, and sorry for being such a newbie to it all

Crawl under your jeep, with your head oriented to the front. Look up where the front drive shaft is attached to your transfer case. To the left and above is where the vacuum motor is (this is what moves it in and out of 4-wheel drive). Is the arm on the vacuum motor attached to the linkage of the transfer case? The pin that connects the two can rust away or fall out, reconnect if it's gone (mine rusted away and left me in 4 wheel). You can also shift it from 2 to 4 and vice-versa, by this linkage if you need to.

BTW, the NP229 transfer case is a "full time" case when in 4-hi, so it will not hurt anything to run that way on pavement.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I really appreciate it. I'm just getting started on working on this Wag, and I'm guessing this site will save me thousands in the long run, since I'm not really the automotive type. That and I don't think you can truely bond with your Jeep if you don't do the majority of the work yourself.

Just went and looked, and just as you suspected, there is a little "arm" dangling from the transfer case area, with a pin hole but no pin. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you again. I will sleep much better tonight.

Woah...I saw the topic, and though it was about a 4 Wheel drive Gremlin...the car, not the problem. A 4 Wheel drive Gremlin, or Eagle Kammback woould be sweet. I'll be quiet now...

Sorry, I thought somebody might read that wrong when I posted it, sorry about that.

Anyhow, just an update, I went to checker and got a pin to replace the missing one, cost was $2.20, they sold me like 8 pins in a back. They are stainless steel so this one shouldn't rust out. I tested it out the first time shifting after the install took like 30 seconds for it to switch, but after the initial switch and back, it was back to normal.

Thank you again for your help, my dreams last night were no longer about a hefty repair cost, they were back to the usual dream. Me in a wagoneer filled with beautiful babes.

Lets see, Andrew Love in a Wagoneer full of beautiful babes.....I guess if I had a name like 'Love' I'd be driving a Wagoneer full of babes instead of a J-truck full of landscaping debris

XJs don't have a chassis...

What is Andrew Love supposed to refer to Andrew?

OK, lets reign it back in for a moment. I have a question for Andrew.
Did your clanking noise quit?
