-80 cherokee "cleanup"

Plan is to have it pass inspection to get the plates , as they where given back to the "dmv" in 1997. Hope to use it as a "now and then driver" , and some trips in summertime.
Have started to tidy it up a bit , and will be needing parts pretty soon .
Things i need to get done :
Blinkers not working. (hazard lights does)
Tailgate window. ( rebuild kit , motor and switch needed )
rear passenger doors window. ( missing cranks , and one regulator )
Replace headlights .
Brake caliper rebuild .

other things i would like to do :
New carpet .
New front seat covers.
clean up electrical.

Posting a few pictures of how i found it . and some updates of progress .
link to a thread i made before i purchased it : http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=190421

When running , fuel was coming out from the accelerator pump .
Found the membrane to be running out of rubber.

Had the old carb off the J20 laying around , and it had a working membrane.
no more fuel leak

Tires had som damage making them not passing inspection.
as i hope to have it inspected while still wintertime , i went on to clean up the
whitespoke wheels with stud tires and put them on .

Brushed them with a radiator brush dipped in formic acid , and rubbed over them with scotchpads .
Turned out ok i think.

All the rubber valves was nearly gone , and two vas leaking a bit .
So i had some brass valves put in

Turned out OK? NO! They turned out AMAZING!!!

In the "as found" pictures, it looks like it is wearing bright wheels instead of the white ones. No? I absolutely love the lights on the bumper!

Can we see a good picture of your dash? It looks like you have a radio delete and I have never seen one before on a FSJ. It also look like there is a QT switch on the driver side of your glovebox. I know thats not what it is but it looks like it.

You are correct . bright / chrome wheels for the summer tires , but tires on them will not pass inspections , so i will use the winter white ones as off now .
will be giving them a shine later on and new tires .

No good picture at the moment. just arrived at work offshore. i did manage to snag a pic from a video . is it the black round thing on the driver side off the glovebox ? that is an 12V socket outlet. just underneath the dash two more outlets. if it is the green knob switch to the right of the dual outlet (can see it just below the "baltic universial ignitionkey") it has been for the parking/auxiliary heater (from the weird bolt pattern) .

Also , when visiting the switch topic ,,
Any idea of the small black and white pull switch placed to the left and right side of the wiper switch ? are they original ? i dont have them on my J20 .
Have note been able to notice any action when pulling them.

Some small progress lately . still some way to go , but the list for getting it
past inspection is getting shorter.

Got a new ignition switch fitted .
Pain in the a.. to get the steering wheel off , and i had to modify a jaw bearing puller to get it sorted .

Got the turning signals working again .
was kind of baffled when it turned out to be only a dead relay , and not faulty connections or wires.
as luck turned out , my local tool/leisure/car supply store had a 2 pin flasher relay for Volvo PV that fitted right in and did the job.

https://imgur.com/N92LVyx

Also replaced the broken headlights with a set i had removed from my J20 during grille swap . Looking better already

The transmission has been leaking fluid , and i have been trying to find and fix the leak.
At first it looked like it was leaking from the pan seal. so i got a new gasket and filter , and went to town on it .
in my experience, often the pan bolts have been over torqued , making it hard to seal. got the pan flange nice and straight , and refitted . did a test drive , and parked it back in the garage . next day , a new atf pond on my floor
now it looks like a bad rear oilseal. not sure how to attack this issue , but i guess i will need to pull the QT case and replace the seal . i do have a bottle of a kind of seal/gasket renewer that i have had good results with before , even on high pressure hydraulic systems. i may try it out first.

Had to go to work again , and i try to make some progress even when away at work .so i pulled out the radio/cassette player out , and took it with me.
The fm radio part did work , but the cassette did not .
i am not sure if it will be used , but i find pleasure in making old broken stuff work again
and also , i was very curious to hear the tape that was in it , as i have never heard German country music before

opened it out and found that the mec. that pull the tape in would not work.
it was dirty of course , and after some tinkering i find a slightly loose drive belt for that mec. also a sprocket out of position , so last owner must have tried to jam it in. Got the sprocket right , gave it a good clean , lubed all moving parts and found a o-ring that work as drive belt (original belt is square shaped) .

Now it works , and "ich heisse bob" is blasting through the speakers in my office as i write

Slow progress but getting there.
Front brakes was in need of new pads and caliper service.
Old pads had given good value for the money .
Rust removal outside and inside.
Dirty inside and some small rust pittings.
Gave them new seals , piston , bolts and bushings.
Cleaned out the master cylinder and flushed the system with brake fluid.
Did of course forget to order new brake hoses..
So i will need to bleed it once more after replacing them.

I am currently struggling with leaking seals in my drivetrain.
After cleaning out the front and rear diffs , and filling up with new fluids the axle shaft seals started to leek. same with the transmission output shaft seal , and most likely seals on the QT .
Had no luck this far finding new seals .

Anyone that knows where to get all these seals ?
Any tip would me much appreciated .

I am also wondering what kind of fluid to use on my transfercase.
I belive i read that the TCL-1 fluid is for up to 1979 ?
My service book just say "jeep transfercase fluid" ?

As usual slow progress since last post . Had to give the boat s hull new coat to get ready for summer , so the jeep was moved one notch down the list but some small things got done
back in june before all my ongoing projects gotta grind to a hault.

Still getting it ready to pass inspection .
Got a set of new tires for the chrome wheels . after some consideration i decided to not get offroad tires , as dont plan to use it offroad. i got other toys for that . kind of like the look of the tires it came with , so i got some cheep similar ones.

Fresh from the tire shop

Wheels din not look so good , so i decided to give them a good acid wash.
That made them look even worse , as i did not see that they had a coat of clear on ..
On the positive side , the acid made the clear crispy .
It came off fairly easy with paint scraper , box-cutter blades and elbow grease.
The rusty spots was bigger on the outside of the clear , and was not that bad when the clear was gone

Gave them a polish to finish off.

Bit embarresed of how messy and dirty my workshop is ...
To many projects , and to little space ..

They turned out better then expected . still not put on the jeep

I have lots of leaky shaft seals in the drivetrain .
I belive the gearbox rear outputshat seal is leaking bad.
transfercase has to be taken out . Also the diff seals started leaking after
i cleaned them out and filled on new oil .

Got as far as removing the driveshafts and replacing the diff seals when i busted up my left sholder in an unrelated incident .. That was when all projects and its time plans went out the window.

Do not apologize for your "work" shop, as that is where the work gets done.

If it was all clean and pretty, then it would just be more living space, where not much work ever gets done!

Nice progress, if only a little at a time
