76' Cherokee towing capacity

Hi Guys,

Im in the process of registering my 786' cherokee in Sweden and they want some kind of paper stating what the towing capacity is of the jeep. Does anyone have a factory manual or similar that has this info? Can you snap a pic or post a file showing the data?

Thanks!!

Jeffrey

The factory approved trailer tow rating depended on the engine, drivetrain, suspension, axle ratio, other options.

It varied anywhere from 2000 pounds to 7500 pounds.

I love how arguements end as soon as Ristow comments. Ristow is right...again.

Here is what you are after. It's in the 1976 Jeep brochure.

Thanks! Do you know if there is another version for a T-15a /D20 combo?

T-15 is a 3-speed transmission. That will likely limit you to 3500 pounds factory rating because the 4-speed trans and the automatics gave you quite a bit more torque multiplication at low speed to get a heavy trailer rolling.

Unfortunately, without an automatic I don't think you're going to find any factory paperwork that recommends towing.

My 1973 towing pamphlet shows the manual transmissions being rated for 3500 pounds trailer weight. Any trailer heavier than that they specify the automatic transmission.

I wouldn't be afraid to tow above 3500 pounds (likely no more than 5000) with a manual transmission so long as it was a 4-speed and had a good deep axle ratio. This is where a 'granny gear" 1st comes in handy. A 3-speed will not have as deep of a first gear to get a heavy load rolling.

I don't know if you read his actual post or not but he's looking for Jeep paperwork for his year to submit for registration. Not something from a different year followed by someone's random thoughts.

Jeffery, I've got an original 76 Jeep sales brochure which has the info Ghinmi posted in his reply. If a factory sales brochure will help with the registration process, PM me and I can airmail it for the cost of postage.
