Screeching belts!

My belts have always been screechy in my FSJs - mainly when the motor gets wicked hot and sits for a minutes. On restart they will scream until I blip the throttle. Have wirebrushed the pulleys to deglaze, use a crowbar on the alt to try and get all the tension possible on it.

That it's happened in two different rigs makes me think it's me. It didn't happen in an '84 I had 20 years ago though. Any tips?

Perhaps a different brand of belts?

I had the squealing problem for quite a while; finally got a belt tension gauge & saw that I wasnt putting near enough tension on the belts. Power steering pump on my 90 GW takes 130 lbs, and alternator/A/C belts take 65/ea. Also, I was missing the belt tensioner on the power steering pump - fortunately I was able to find one at the junkyard. Havent had the squealing problem since.

That's almost as good sounding as Screeching Weasel!

Mine were silent when I had V-Belts. Then they screamed for a while when I had a serpentine kit. When I sold my truck they were silent for a the last 2 years or so. HOWEVER DO NOT thing a serpentine kit is a good fix. Please, do not even consider it.

If any antifreeze or oil gets on the belts and pulleys, then they will slip and squeal. If I am doing a job that might get coolant on the pulleys, then I remove the belts first and I wash off the pulleys afterwards. I may also clean the pulleys with brake cleaner, then put new belts on if they were squealing before that job. The belt should be soft and flexible. Replace if the rubber is dry or cracked. If reusing belts, then I clean them with warm water and a little liquid dish detergent, then rinse off well. Over tightening a belt will eventually cause bearing failure on the involved components. Too loose and they will slip. I have found that belt dressing did not work for long, I have tried both liquid and spray on.

All good stuff here! Will try giving the PS pump more tension, because there is no way that the alt can get tighter. Man that thing is tricky to tension!
