Truck won't go into gear intermittently
So this just happened for the 3rd time.... 78 j10 has been running pretty well. Drove it around the neighborhood 2 weekends ago, knocked a few things off its to-do list throughout the week. I went to take it for a ride this weekend and it wouldn't go into gear.
You could hear a slippage as it tries to go into reverse. It makes a grinding noise as it goes back into park.
This happened 2 other times, and all I had to do was shift it in and out of 4wd. Someone on here suggested that I might have hit 4wd shifter while working on it, which is possible.
This time it took a lot of time, shifting in and out of 4wd, and shifting gears to finally get it to move. I tried giving it throttle a couple times and it seemed like the motor continued revving up until I shut it off.
Once it finally went into gear, it drove fine again and hasn't happened the last 2 days.
The trans fluid looks good and level is slightly overfull. The quadratrac fluid has metal in it and is way overfilled.
I'm planning to drain and replace transfer case fluid.
Should I do th400 trans fluid and filter at same time?
And what do you guys suspect the issue is?
