AMC 258 Valve Cover Vent

Hello, I am rebuilding a 1980 AMC 258 from a J10 and I need to replace the rubber grommets that go in the top of the valve cover. I bought a pair from Team Grand Wagoneer but they don't fit even remotely well. The old ones took prying and pulling to get out but the new ones almost fell into place and once in they move around quite a bit. I'm pretty certain they won't seal well once it is running and may even leak oil.

Has anybody gotten replacement grommets that fit well in the stock metal valve cover and where did you get them?

Moroso has several listed on their web site under "valve cover accessories." Might find the right size there.

Check with some AMC vendors as well. Kennedy American in Ohio is my preferred AMC parts source.

TGW won't know anything about the sixes, I suspect. They probably sent you the grommets for a V8.

The six valve cover has two grommet ports - one for the PCV valve connecting to the manifold, and one that admits filtered air to the crankcase from a filter in the air cleaner.

Prior to '76 the filtered air connection was a molded hose with one end that fits into the valve cover top. From '76 on, this uses plain hose with a hard plastic elbow that goes into the valve cover grommet.

I believe this elbow is the same size as the PCV valve, and you need two each of the same grommet to fill the holes. Looking at my '77 and the parts book, this is correct. This is Jeep PN 3225627, currently widely available from Crown. https://www.crownautomotive.net/Valve-Cover-Grommet/J3225627.html Quadratec is the largest distributor of Crown parts.
