Gear Change...Carrier Too?
Okay i have a 1980 Chero W/T and im going with a 6 inch lift and 35's. Changing up to 4.56 gears. Question is do I need to change the carrier too? Its stated to have 3.31 gears from the previous owner.

I think 4.56 is the break, I think you will need a carrier, I'll have to look,not sure.

You will need a different carrier for the 44 for anything over 3.92. IIRC the 20 will need to change for anything over 4.09 but i'm not positive on it.

Not sure what IIRC stands for. If i go with 4.10's would i still have to change carrier? Also Bj's does not carry a carrier for the AMC to accommodate larger gears. Any Suggestions?

Ahh got it.
Also I checked randy s and he does carry the carrier. Would I be able to reuse my spider gears or would it be best to buy a new set to go with it?

reuse spider gears and thrust washers will be fine, unless there is signs of serious wear. but know would be the time to add a locker if you were thinking about it.

You can install "thick" gears without changing the carrier in a D44.

I bought a used set(4.10) for $50 from a Jeep Rubicon with 500 miles on 'em.
Anyplace that sells D44 r&p gears should have them.

Quick search netted this result....never done business with the place, and no idea about the price(high/low/avg.).

Okay i used this gear calculator and im wondering do i really need to change out my Gears from 3.31 to 4.56? Or would i be fine?
My Settings are tremac 178 with NP208 35's and 3.31 gears Vs
tremac 178, NP208, 35's and 4.56.
Seems as if the 3.31's would be streetable about keeping the RPM's down for travel but with the jeep just be sluggish?

The rule of thumb is...
31" tires = 3.73 gears
33' = 4.10
35" = 4.56
An FSJ with V8 power can get away with running larger tires and stock gears, but performance will be lacking.

Don't get me wrong...the Cherokee will turn those 35s w/stock gears. You're not going to have the same zip it had and fuel economy will suffer even more, but it will turn the big meats on 3.31s.
I've run 33-35" tires w/3.54s before. Aint the best combo, but it got me where I was going.
31s and 3.31 gears roll pretty well.

Also, try contacting Bull Gear Inc. - aka ncjeepers (Tony Casey) about doing your gear swap. He has a shop in Locust, NC. A bit of a drive for you, but it may save you some $$$.
