looking at a 79 j10 got some ?'s

Well I've got my eyes on a parts rig/fixer upper j10 that belongs to a buddy of mines dad. It's a 79 and has a good bit of rust and has a flatbed. I plan on either taking the wide track axles and trans for the waggy or fixing it up with the good interior parts and motor out of the waggy. Was parked 3 years ago after being used as a work truck with a swapped in built up 327 out of a javelin amx. Now for the questions, what gears were available in 79 in a j10 (BTW its a quadratrac w/low) what would you do? Fix the rust on the j10 and swap motors or fix up the waggy a bit and use it. I've been wanting a j10 and the waggy has as much or more rust than what this j10 has but I planned on just wheeling the waggy and buying a j10 to drive. The flares are hacked (sadly) but I would probably buy new front fenders anyways and redo the rotted wooden flatbed. Will post pics later. Oh, the truck doesn't come with the 327 BUT he only wants 250 bucks which is less than scrap price!!!

Just got the vin and decoded it, used to be a 360 and its a shortbed!!! Around here shortbed anything full size is pretty rare but shortbed j10's are hard to find!!! Hmm might be the one!!!

Put the waggy motor in it, and drive it.

Were the only gears optional in 79 the same as 78 3:54 and 4:09??? Only has surface rust on the frame, maybe this is the diesel swap candidate I've been looking for

Probably 3.54, you could get 3.07's in the Wags, not sure about the trucks.

Also, Javelins never had a 327. If it's a Rambler motor it's out of an earlier model.

Sorry for the mistake, he said the motor was out of a javelin amx and he said it was a 327, he must have gotten confused. I will post more pics tomorrow once I can get them from him (bad mountain cell service) he always said it was VERY rusty, but compared to my waggy its rust free!!! Is this bad, should I consult an AMC engineer or west coast full size jeeper with my problem???

Thumbs down Nice parts rig...

What a pile...

I'd save up for a little nicer one. Don't waste your time and money on junkyard fodder. Trust me, I've been there and it's not worth it.

My plan was to buy it for the axles and good trans for my waggy then make some extra money for the scrap value, plus, that's nice for around here!!!

From what I've seen and what you've told us that Waggy is in the same or worse shape. Time to start fresh. Do yourself a favor and save up a little more money (You're only 13, you've got plenty of time) and start searching outside your geographical location. TRUST ME you will miles ahead with a nicer rig. I wasn't allowed to buy a vehicle until I was 18 years old. My dad told me the same things I am telling you. I didn't want to listen and went behind his back and bought my first FSJ, a 1981 Cherokee Chief, for $650 when I was 17. I really wish I had listened to my father. What a pile of junk it was, rusted out beyond recognition but I thought "Hey, it's not too bad for being around here it's whole life." I wrenched and worked and tweaked on that thing for a good 4 months straight and got nowhere with it. It wasn't worth it, it was too far gone to save. I ended up cutting my losses and scrapping it. Never again will I buy a rusty Midwest rig. My 79 Wagoneer was $1500 and came from Idaho and my 79 Cherokee was $1157 and came from Arizona. Both were pretty much rust free when I got them. It's well worth the little extra money to look elsewhere for a better rig.

My buddy showed me more pics today and I got this one from him, has 95,000 miles but it has been abused (something that comes with living around here) might just buy this for parts and use the waggy a but. Probably will sell that too once I find the right j10

I'm telling' ya dude, drive down the road to Jake and Jackie's place and check out what they have. There's a ton of stuff there, and some a lot better than those, some worse. You could literally piece a waggy or J10 together, paint it, and have a slick looking rig. You might even get some food out of it.

You'd better plan on lifting that wagoneer if you want to run WT axles. Or negative offset wheels
