Armrest Project

Years ago, on my '77 Chief, I modified the armrest. Back then, when CDs were the hot ticket, I had a massive collection of them. After putting a nice Alpine stereo with 6x9s in the doors, I needed a place to keep the CDs. Noticing that the stock armrest had wasted space under the base, I took the upholstery off, and using a hacksaw, cut the rear base off and attached it to a wood base I had made. I was able to fit 30 CDs in there, plus keep the armrest top functional.

Fast forward to now... The Chief is sadly long gone (totalled), and I decided to do another one. My goal is to have a functional original armrest, with a modified base containing a hidden compartment and a drink holder.

First I had to find one. After buying one fromLycanthrope, I had the top part re-apholstered. Then, after taking the bottom vinyl off, I carefully cut the off the rear part of the stainless steel base/frame off.

Then, I made a wood base with pre finished maple scraps left over from a cabinet job. The outer width of the base equals the inside dimension of the metal, which when slipped on to the new box, fits perfectly.

Then I fastened the metal rear to the wood box with multiple sheet metal screws.

More to come soon!

Did you know? Willys is just Willis spelled differently, but pronounced the same. Neither Willy nor his apostrophe are involved.

Nice job.

Here is a picture of the secret compartment, where I used magnets to hold it in place. The compartment lies underneath the cup holder (which is removed in this picture). You can also see one of the 4 nut plates where the OEM mounting brackets will attach:

Also, a pic of the lid spotted on the base. Although it probably be used for a seat very often, I wanted that to be an option.

Next will be foam!

I ironed maple strips on to the butt edges that will (or may be at some point) exposed. After sanding and clear coating them, I covered the base in foam. I salvaged the OEM top of the foam base and re used it. Also I punched holes in the foam where the bolts will attach the base to the mounting brackets.

Next phase is the upholstery shop!

Thanks!

Got it back from the apholstery shop. Had them paint the vinyl trim to match the color of the leather.

Installed the driftwood for the cup holder. Need to seal it still. Found the wood on the Hudson River bank across from New York City while on a layover. They both appeared to be wood floats for concrete, tumbled and rounded by the elements.
