since you have the door panel off, just hook up a cheap battery charger with some wires to the motor and see if it goes up or down , you can change the polarity, if the motor works then its the body...

anodized aluminum, I sanded mine down them buffed it with a buffing wheel on a angle grinder, you have to wax it fairly often to prevent corrosion - or uou could have it clear powercoated satin
