I would start here. Not saying it's the problem, but without the fan, everything else seems to work as it should. I'm not certain of the inner workings of a clutch fan, but maybe it's not...

I don't know if the columns changed after '72/73. If yours is the same as 74 and later columns, there is some writeups in the tech section here on the disassembly of them. I think they are gm style...

I bet that is the ratcheting "catch" that does the canceling, and thus why it didn't cancel since it was boken. But you probably already figured that out.

This is what I did, except I went with the rag joint shaft. My upper joint happened to be really sloppy. It was more than I wanted to spend, but now that it's in, I've forgotten the money part....

The chevy has a different bellhousing bolt pattern than the buick, so an adapter is needed ($$), then the motor mounts might not work - don't know about this one - so fabrication or buying mounts...

So oljeep.com doesn't have a TSM for that early of a jeep, but it does have a jeep parts manual for your year. It's a huge file, as it covers 62-73 jeep models, so it'll take a long time to download,...

Find the model number on the carb. It should be 7 numbers long and start with a 70. You might be able to find some spec info on the web with it. Or, maybe the TSM for that jeep might list the jet...

Is it running lean? When warm, place your hand over the top of the carb and see if the idle increases. If so, it's lean. Might have to go up a jet size or change the rods. Of course, a vacuum leak...

I dont know if this would apply in this case, but i think some of those emmisions components worked off temp controlled vacuum, with some sort of temp sensor to open or close vacuum, maybe check that...
