I would definitely worry about cheap aftermarket...

I would definitely worry about cheap aftermarket lifters. That's what cost me an engine. After that episode, good name brand lifters only for me.

Try the easy things first. Sounds, no pun intended, like an exhaust leak at an exhaust port to me.

Remove the exhaust gasket and look for burnt or discolored spots. Beats tearing into the engine...

The first place was probably a bunch of panzees that didn't know how to use a bender or welder so it's easier to say no, it's not legal. They only order pre-bent parts and install them. :D
