I was surprised too! I think it was the EGR that made the difference for me. I figure that the carb was tuned to compensate for this, so enabling the EGR has probably brought me back to the right...

Those plugs are a nightmare, even when new. The one on my Wagoneer has been replaced with a generic modular connector, which is much easier to deal with.

A second vote here for rebuilding the stocker!
I'd never touched a carb before rebuilding ours, and honestly found it incredibly easy. Very simple to tune too, and mine has been dead reliable since.
