I would have a machinist set the spring height to the factory specification. It may or may not need shimmed.
I think it is around 1.8" but not sure.

Pull all of the spark plugs and set the timing with a timing light and someone cranking the starter.
If you can get the timing set correctly that way and #1 is at TDC, it is not a timing chain...

Which oil filter are you using? A poor quality oil filter will leak down over night resulting in rattle on start up.
