3 clunks.... huh. I get a grinding noise if I do the same thing but that's from bad engines mounts allowing the engine to twist too much.... allowing the front driveshaft to rub against something....

Did you replace the expansion valve? Mineral oil can get stuck in there and the valving is different for r134a vs r12. Might explain the pressure issues you are having.

Keep in mind, the Toyota A340 shares the valve body with the AW4. Not sure if that helps with rebuild kits but just wanted to throw that out there.

Could be several things... catching a wire, binding channel guides, rust ect. You'll need to open it up and take a look. Also, might as well throw in a relay upgrade while you're taking a look at it....

The carb bowl might be evaporating out over those 3 days. That may be why you have to crank it (refill the bowl with the mechanical pump). Although, I think the fuel in the bowl would last longer...

FWIW, I did a 4 speed conversion + EFI on my AMC 360 GW on stock tires...
