biggest issue with stock duraspark can be too much advance under certain conditions.
for stock engine/stock cam a recurve isn't really uselful.
but sometimes distributor needs tweaking with...

a 4.0 flywheel has the incorrect balance for a 360 engine.
It's called match balancing. He isn't "using" the flexplate for anything other than "matching" the balance of the flywheel for his engine.

XJ used same relay if you have a salvage yard nearby might be able grab a used one for few bucks.

Did you rev engine to ~1500rpm?
When you tried to charge it initially did the compressor clutch kick on?

Sometimes you need to jumper the low pressure cutoff switch if clutch does not kick in.
