Spent $900+ on machine work for a SBC LT1 block ~same time.

for stock engine/stock cam a recurve isn't really uselful.

If it backfired the power valve likely blew out. They fail if you look @ them the wrong way and a backfire kills them 99.9% time.

It's called match balancing. He isn't "using" the flexplate for anything other than "matching" the balance of the flywheel for his engine.

XJ used same relay if you have a salvage yard nearby might be able grab a used one for few bucks.
They do occasionally fail.

Did you rev engine to ~1500rpm?
When you tried to charge it initially did the compressor clutch kick on?
Sometimes you need to jumper the low pressure cutoff switch if clutch does not kick in.
