  • 401 Swap into an 81 J20

Anything special needed for this swap. The truck already has a 360/t18/np208 setup. I know about the 401 flywheel and have that covered. The rest should just be remove/replace correct? The 401 came out of a 75 waggy.
81 J20 "Mater", 401/T-18/NP208, Rhino Conversion, 4" Rusty's all-spring lift, extended length front shackles, 2" rear blocks. LT285/70r-16 M.T. Baja Claws, Front Locker, Custom Rear Bumper, Custom Front Bumper under construction.
    Status: Up and running

I don't know how this affects a T18 install like it does a 727, but if the 401 was mated to a T400, there is the adapter ring/bushing in the back end of the crank shaft that you may need to remove.

    It is mentioned here:

The 401 was originally mated to a slushbox. Not sure whether it was a th400 or a 727 though.

you'll be putting a pilot bearing in the crank for the T18.

Is it a bearing or a bushing? Should I be able to pick this up easily at a local parts store?

Replacing the 360 with a 401 is illegal in all states west of the Mississippi - further, if you're caught in the process of doing the swap they can take your jeep and your house....

Being the kind soul that I am I will offer to take the engine off of your hands without charge... really...

Heh, no really, other than the things mentioned, maybe a 12-pack of your favorite frosties. Haver fun while you're droppin' it in.

usually is,but some use a bearing, can be either. if you get handed a sealed bearing don't automatically think it's wrong. dunno if AMC/Jeep ever used the bearing.

Good deal. I will have the machine shop install one while the engine is there.

Have a 7/16" drill handy, and hopefuly you have the hardware from the 401, most the acessory bolts on the 401 will be 7/16" vs. 3/8" on your 360 so you will have to do some work there, not a biggy but PITA if you don't plan for it. The exhaust manifold bolts will be 3/8" for all on the 401, where the 360 will have 5/16" bolts on the front and back holes, and 3/8" on the centers.
