I like Edelbrock intakes with Holley Off Road Avenger carbs. Edelbrock just seems to make good intakes. I got em on all kinds of Fords, even the big drag boat.

We've used Edelbrock carbs, Holley's and Demon's. Edelbrocks go in easy and always seem to go right out of the box but that's it. Cant seem to fine tune them but they stay in the ball park. The Holleys always need a bit of tweaking and then they stay, forever, done. The Demon's are just for big stuff when you want to suck lots of fuel and scare people, like with open headers on big iron (my buddy calls them "toilet bowls")

On my good old AMC 360 I use the OEM 4bbl and the OEM 4300 that came with it. I think they are too simple and don't have the tuning options a Holley has. That said, mine is proving to be reliable but a real pita to dial in. I think that with the OEM intake and COMP RV cam it's turning out to be a really good puller, lots of low end but opens up really nice. I've noticed increased MPG with its small primaries. My engine is too new to go above 4000 but I know it wants to go there bad. Dang engine still wants to act like a street rod. The smoothness on the upper end is weird, and torque seems noticeably good though out. I can feel it all the way and at 4000 the wag still wants to continue accelerating even though I'm holding at 4000. This tells me I have torque up there.

We got an Edelbrock intake from a friend for the other 360 parts wag and my son keeps eying the Holley I have on the shelf. It would be a perfect match but I was saving it for my 460 High Boy swap. The 401 is on hold till we run the crap out of the 360 and finish cutting it up, but that is where the Edelbrock intake will eventually end up.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to add my 2 cents.

    -40

That remote control start would be mandantory if I lived in AK.
Actually one of my favorite features of Cheby Truck, even turns on the seat heater.
EFI definately starts better than any carb.

I still haven't decided on which carb to chose for the J20.

Open for any more opinions on which carb suits the trucks needs for intended useage with some origionality if reliable.

Guess be alot easier to just order new carb and intake than hunt for good used one.

For me in the cold weather up here the daily driver EFI rig it the way to go. Not sure yet about the J20/M715. It will be a plow rig and tow rig with a 401. But needs to be parked outside in the winter and start up reliably in -40 weather. EFI is also easy to install an auto start on and my lazy old *** likes that idea! But I suppose an auto start would work fine on an edelbrock or holly carb too. That rig is old enought to be non IM for me so I can do what ever I want with it. The 89 will need smog leagle stuff though. One of my local 4x4 club active members is the local IM referee so he keeps us on our toes in a friendly way...

    EFI

I got the Edelbrock EFI in Scrambler, and while it has been trouble free, I cringe if it ever breaks and I gotta work on it.
Don't think it's making full HP and I've spent lots of time with tuner guys on chassis dyno. They say certain paramaters are maxed.
There is a guy in AZ that is Scrambler nut and FI specialist (all they do), when I swap engines around, it will go to AZ for him to swap FI, I forget which kind he likes. That will be years away.

Joe rode in Scrambler and he liked the power, but 280 to rear wheels with FI while it dynoed 480 with carb at engine builder something don't seem right.

I wanna keep the J 20 truck kinda simple and factory looking.

I'm planning on going EFI on my 360 in the 89 Dennis. Howell makes a good kit that is IM leagle which I need up here. It costs more up front but if they ever do go IM in your area you will really wish you had a leagle system installed. Howell told me they could easily set up the system for a 401 as well so I might get two kits and do one in the J20/M715.

    CALL ME OLD FASHION

DENNIS CALL ME OLD FASHION BUT I LIKE THE HOLLEY STREET OR TRUCK AVENGER 670. THEY RUN GREAT OUT OF THE BOX. THE 4350 OR 4300 IS WAY TOO COMPLICATED IF IT EVER GOES SOUTH. HAS A NICE FACTORY LOOK. THE EGR DILUTES THE INTAKE CHARGE WITH EXHAUST GASSES. NOT A PERFORMANCE ENHANCER SO DITCH IT IF YOU CAN. WATCH OUT SOME CARBS ARE CALIBRATED A LITTLE ON THE FAT SIDE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE EGR.

MY OPINION, FOR YOU, RUN THE EDELBROCK PERFORMER AND A HOLLEY STREET AVENGER 670 AND BE DONE WITH IT. THAT IS WHAT MY 87 J-20 WITH THE 401 IS RUNNING. I GOT THE CARB FROM GREG TAYLOR AND IT HAS BEEN A BIT MASSAGED..

    Carb tuning

I got an old man that I have to catch him in right mood to tune, but he's got the Carter on my 84 CJ-7 running incredible.

Motorcraft 4300 or 4350 good reliable carbs?

factory intake or Edelbrock or Offy ?

they're all fine once dialed in CORRECTLY.

i think edelbrocks are the hardest to dial in CORRECTLY. they ARE the most forgiving,so you don't HAVE to dial them in correctly. they'll run pretty good out of tune. holleys aren't as forgiving, but are far more tunable, and i think easier to tune as well.

    Realiable Carb ?

Oh....most important, I got enough Jeeps to build and keep running and I'm no good with carbs at all.
So I'd like to pick carb that is realiable, I.E. not tuning it all time.

That's probably more important than performance with this truck.

the 4350 is it's own goofy butterfly arrangement. stock intake for that carb is best.

4300 is a square bore carb,so it'll fit em all. performer intake is about the best available. get an egr one.

EGR does not affect performance much. still,i like to run without em.

i (think) got one all apart in a box if you want it.

Which is the best intake for the Motorcraft 4350 ?

What's the bad part of having a EGR, does it affect performance much?
Looking for torque, low end power, and freeway passing while hauling a baby Jeep or Gladiator on trailer.

If so I guess I could machine a hole to put the EGR in to look factory, but it wouldn't function, which would be OK. Anyone ever done that?

Airflow....they have SMALL ports on the intake.

Works fine, but like Greg stated they run out of oompf about 4k.

I'm sure port matching it to the intake side of the heads would help it a bunch.

Depends on what you want to run it for. It's an economy intake and good for about 4,000 RPM MAX. It's not designed for towing ...
