  • 4bbl carb/intake with cruise control 87 J20

Wanting to put cruise control on my 87 J20.

Which 4bbl carb & intake would be the best for towing and still work with the factory cruise control?

Also would like to actually keep all the emissions stuff operational, for the future smog natazi's.

I've heard the offenhouser intake gave the best low end torque?

      Intake

Dennis I run the Performer but the Offy is good also. Stay away from the old SP2P even if you find one cheap. The stock AMC 4 bl is not bad either just heavy.

any holley or edelbrock with the typical universal throttle bracket will be easy to hook up.

I lucked into a free AMC 4bbl intake, weighs a ton, but came with everything including the brackets and a 4300 carb. Everything hooked up but I needed to swap in the old cruise control bracket.

I have a Holley ORA sitting on the shelf and it looks like it wouldn't be a big prob hooking it up.

Check out this thread, it has a pic of Ristow's set up for the Holley:http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=98829

Wonder if can even find Offy intakes anymore, I saw a NOS one few months ago.

                Offy

Good deal, I figured I'd have to hunt one down.

Would I still be able to keep all the emissions stuff on the truck?

Which Offy intake should I get?

                Or Edelbrock?

I didn't see an Offy w/EGR. You may have to go with the Edelbrock Performer EGR.

The Dual-Port is the best for torque and economy, but no EGR. Performer EGR intake is the only EGR I've seen, other than a rare SP2P EGR intake on the forums before, but no good for towing.

I would suggest Performer EGR or Offy Dual-Port.

Check with Offy on the Q-jet intake, I think they may have dropped it in a Dual Port design ... still have the Holley pattern Dual-Port.

I don't know what all would be involved with hooking up cruise with a Holley or Carter or Edelbrock carb ... a call to their tech support lines would help.
                      Sincerely,

i think the dual port for a V8 has horrible fuel distribution. especially on the secondary circuit. i'd bet a dyno test would show a performer intake better all the way around. probably a great I6 intake though.

it's pretty straight forward if they have the typical universal throttle bracket, which they've all had for years.

                          Economy

                          Thanks for the help guys.

Sure don't care much about "economy", just love to hear the secondaries kick in and listen to the flowmasters make their music.

IF/When the 360 in the 36K mile truck goes out or loses compression in any of the cylinders, then it will be time to build a reliable 401 again, but make it look factory.

probably swap the one out of Scrambler and put the Indy Aluminum block and heads in Scrambler.

Which 4bbl carb "looks" factory but is still performance carb?
How many CMF would be best to run for towing power?

4300 motorcraft was factory on the cars and i believe early jeeps. decent carb too. they were a conservative carb cfm-wise (500-550cfm-ish? 600 max),which is good for towing.

i (think) got one all apart in a box if you want it.
