I spent 25 bucks and bought the cd. Has the parts manual as well as the service manual. Worth the 25 bucks

Yep, in fact need to find the TSM specific to the 1988 as they are a little different here and there

Just downloaded it. Works fine. Make sure you have enough room for the file.

BJ's web site says the '89 manual covers '88. Faxon shows the MR253 '84-88 for your vehicle.

Faxon might be out of stock - was hoping they had it on CD, I have a CD for my '83 Dodge, so nice to be able to print out a page when needed. Thanks Tim

Faxon should be a last resort.

            BJ's have a (non-faxon) reprint?

            In not try Bishko

Does the m.r.244 factory manual actually cover the Grand Wagoneer? Hard to tell

Faxon is the only one that will have the original paper copy from Jeep/Chryco. You might find the original manual on eBay too. BJ's may be selling the Bishko reprint in some form. Any of them should be a reprint of the factory publication, originally sold to customers across the dealership parts counters for several years after these cars were new. They are meant as a reference for the line mechanics/techs at the dealership, and won't teach you anything about cars that an ASE certified tech would already know.

You could also refer to the 3rd party manuals. Don't know if these still existed in 1988, but there were "Motors Manuals" that covered a single year and all vehicles from that year. These were meant for independent shops and gas stations. There are manuals by Chiltons and Haynes that are sold in parts stores typically; these cover many years of the same vehicle. May be useful if you need more help than an ASE tech would need. Caution - IME they are rife with errors.

The modern solution is an AllData subscription, which will put all-makes manuals online for you to read. It's about $200 ... per month.

Faxon's publications are on thin paper and poorly bound. I've posted about this in the past. BJ's was selling manual's from a different source.

You can tell immediately upon looking at the cover.

How other companies are doing publishing reprints when Faxon is the 'officially licensed' company for Chrysler, I do not know. I just know they do not have exclusive except for certain items, such as assembly blueprints.

The Hayne's Wagoneer, J-Truck, Grand Wagoneer Repair Manual is pretty good for an an aftermarket book. They use a 70's and an 1986 FSJ for all the photos. I found it worth it just for the photos, even though mine's an '85. For some things the procedures are pretty helpful. For other things not.

Alldata had a much cheaper deal for folks like us. I haven't checked in a while, but it let users access info on 1 to 3 vehicle models for around $20 a month. I almost subscribed when helping a lady friend with a Ranger.

MR253 is what your after, MR244 is XJ
All the supplements for mr253 manual are on oljeep.com
I scanned them and sent copies to Tom.

There is no 1988 Jeep Manual. They skipped many years of manuals opting to just add to mr253 via supplements.
The '89 or '90 Jeep Manuals do exist and cover the small changes, but also include other models than SJ. There are also some errors in them in regard to SJ.
MR253 is more than adequate for a 1988. The SJ Jeep changed very little after acquisition by Chrysler.
