Factory type of paint for 73? Lacquer?

What kind of paint did the factory use in 70's? Was it lacquer or something else? I'm thinking of painting my 73 next year but wouldn't be taking it down to bare metal or anyhting fancy like that. Just wanted to know for compatability reasons. I believe the upper half of the jeep is original paint - a PO repainted the bottom half with some kind of BC/CC, I would assume enamel.

Most likely the factory paint is urethane enamel. Great to work with - dries hard and durable but mars can be sanded and polished out. I've painted 7 vehicles with it.

Lacquer is relatively soft but easy to apply and multiple coats give the paint "depth." I don't know when the manufacturers switched from lacquer to enamels.

BC/CC came into popular use in the 80's.

Water based paints are very common now, even among body shops. There are some shops in my area that are 100% water based. It requires a complete change in equipment and application methods but apparently is quite durable.
