  • CAM SUGGESTIONS

It's been awhile since I put together a 401 for a truck so I am going to build a 401 for my J-20 project that will start in the spring. Over the next few months i will put the engine together.

Anyone suggest a hydraulic cam? It is an early 401 with 10.25:1 compression. Don't want anything lumpy just decent power. Recalling what I put in my CJ 401 I think it was around .485 lift and like 224 Degrees @ .050

I used a Comp Cams 268H in my 401. Once I had all the vacuum leaks fixed and the EFI tuned correctly, the idle had a really nice minor chop to it. in other words, if you were listening, you could tell it was not a stock cam but it did not sound crazy. It started well in SoCal cold mornings (40 degrees). I had enough vacuum to idle and run my brake booster.

Power wise, it was better than stock but not a ton. A 401 cam is bigger than a 360 cam anyway. Looking back I wish it had a little more exhaust duration but for an off the shelf cam, it ran pretty good with an Edelbrock dual plane intake, long tube headers, and port matched stock heads.

I have a video of the idle on my phone. If you PM me your cell number I will send it along.

I ran a Lunati RV-262 many years ago, not even sure if they market that grind anymore. It had great low-end torque, idled like stock. But since then cams have come a long way. Maybe the simple grinds are similar, but there are so many more options.

I would call Lunati, Crane, Comp etc and talk to their tech people. Might get a good suggestion there, and maybe get a more thorough response taking into consideration your other engine specs.

            part number SUM-8601

Might be just right for a higher compression motor.
