It cost a little more than what you paid for the console, but this guy has console latches that are not keyed:

Aw shucks! I could have stopped by during my OBX trip. That way I could have confirmed for everybody the existence of your fabled HONCHO! Aaaaannnnnd it's from Oregon!? How did that missed Honcho ownership opportunity get past me?
But seriously I could never have taken it to the restoration level you are doing.

I'll just stick with my plain Jane, dismal-rama 79 wag.

    dang driftwood,...

I had forgotten you wanted a Tahoe console,...

I had to remove mine a couple years ago
because my senior dog, Gertie, rode better in wag without it,...

...and the dogs needs win out every time.

    you did a fine job
it will mean even more to you with all that effort

they work well as you already know,....

    I took mine apart too
and lined with carpet in the areas that were supposed to have it....

    nice addition.....

Everything is painted and ready for reassembly. The two case halves required lots of repair with two part epoxy. It is pretty much indestructible now.

    1994 Suburban center console

After a long search, I found a center console from a 1994 Suburban. Other than the missing locking latch and all the dirt, it cost me $15.

I posted these pics using postimages. Thanks SOLSAKS for posting the tutorial!

Disassembled. Ready for cleaning, prep, repairs, and paint.

After almost 2 years, I FINALLY found a cup holder for my center console. The only insert I ever see for this style of center console is the CD holder.
    Little Victory!

    My square Suburban/Tahoe center console.

    Cup holders were a must.

How comfy is it? It looks like just the right height to rest your elbow when driving.

    console

When I found mine, I had to use parts from several consoles. One had a good base, another a lid that wasn't broken, and another had the cupholder. FYI, under the cupholder is a great place to hide things!
I used plastic paint to paint mine black. It's held up well....Del

I am still on the lookout for the apparently uber rare cup holder option for my center console as seen in the below pic. Someday........
