  • The elusive Jeep/AMC cruise control tester tool

Finally found one of these weird little things -- the AM P-C-1R Cruise Control Tester 7079. It looks a lot like an Atari 2600 cartridge.

You unplug your 'yellow box,' and plug your harness into this instead. The instructions were a little tough to follow, but luckily in the 1990 Jeep Electrical Service Manual there is a section on testing the CC with this same tool. So it looks like all of the years with the 'yellow box' control module use this tester.

So using the flowchart from the 1990 Service Manual I was able to test the system in about 3 minutes! Turns out the 4 amp glass inline fuse some Machiavellian AMC engineer tucked into the power feed (and behind the instrument panel) was slow blown. Judging from the dust cake that fell out of the fuse holder that sucker hadn't been open since the first Bush presidency.

This thing is much more rudimentary than you might think. It is a box with six LED lights that light up in a specific order as you're performing the self-test outlined in the instructions. It really just saves you from rooting around behind the dash with an ohmmeter.

Having said that -- it worked great for me, and I'd be happy to loan it out. PM me and we'll make arrangements. I've got the original instructions and the pages from the 1990 Jeep Service Manual I'll send along with it.

There would probably be a decent market if you could replicate it. You could sign me up for one.

Could you open it up and take some pictures? It might not be that hard to reproduce it.

I've changed out the 4a fuse under the dash....but still cant find the culprit.

Any chance you could loan out that "Cruise Control Tester"?

No need to pay that, unless you just want one.

My cruise control used to do all kinds of weird stuff. Sometimes it would hold, sometimes it wouldn't, sometimes it would totally flip out and open the throttle wide only to then slam it shut again. It was a trip. I decided to reset the adjustment screws to the recommended initial settings.

It took me four hours of driving back and forth on a quiet country road with the cruise box pulled out still attached to the wires as I turned the adjustments with a screwdriver as I drove to get it adjusted and working right.

I love how arguements end as soon as Ristow comments. Ristow is right...again.
