Engine power fluctuates: 258 with weber 32/36 dgev

Well its been a while since I checked back here. My jeep and I have been doing well, took it on a week long camping trip with my family. I'll have to post pics later.

I've been noticing something interesting though. The power my engine puts out seems to fluctuate randomly and I can't seem to make heads or tails of it. Just driving around town, it doesn't change while I'm driving, it will either be very responsive to the throttle, while other times it will lag. It does the same thing but fluctuates while I'm driving long distances on the freeway. Seems to lag more often than not. I'm running a 258 with a weber 32/36 dgev progressive carb and a skipwhite hei ignition. Does this make sense to anyone? Please let me know if any additional information would help solve the problem and I'll do my best to get it. Thanks!

Maybe the mechanical advance is occasionally binding on the rotor? (I had mine do that same thing)

I will have to look in to that. How did you find the problem with yours and how would you recommend I check mine?

Pull the cap and check the rotor for scuff marks from the weights. They shouldn't be rusty since it's new. You already bypassed the computer?

Yeah I bypassed the computer a good while back. It's not doing anything now besides showing me that carb check light on the dash. I'll pull the cap tomorrow after work and check then. Thanks!

I pulled the cap and rotor to see if the weights were scraping against the rotor, and this is what I found.

Somewhat dirty. I would assume that dirt got there by being transferred off of the mechanical advance weights and onto the rotor, either through contact or being thrown off. Most of it wiped away, but I didn't see any scuff marks in the plastic. The mechanical advance assembly was pretty dirty as well so I cleaned it up while I was in there. Didn't get an after shot, but this is what it looked like before.

So what are your guys' thoughts on my issue now that I've been able to get some more information? Cleaning up the weights alone didn't make a difference. Thanks everyone!

Take a good look at the end of the weights where it could be hitting.
