  • This thread needs to be a sticky.....please

Washed out fuel tank of 18 yrs since last driven.

Put some gas in existing carb and tried to start it. No start.

Traced connections for no spark, and finding MSD-6A not getting power from IGN wire.

    Cleaned up solenoid starter connections.

More detailed pics taken of interior and specific body damage (minimal).

      • I drove mine too!

My '91 hadn't been used much for a while and was sitting in the garage.
I had a long trip planned two weeks ago, and a couple days before I realized the other cars were all out of action for various reasons.

I fired up the Wagoneer, pulled it out of the garage and put 700 hard miles on it without it batting an eye.
Drove it all of the following week, then another big trip this weekend just gone.

In total, I put around 1500 miles on it (getting compliments the whole way) over that 10 day period and it took it like a champ.
I even used it as my mobile office, much to the amusement of everybody at my work.

I always loved this Jeep, but never expected it to be such a solidly reliable workhorse!

        • That is so nice to hear it worked flawlessly for you

I will be chasing electric issue this weekend.

Brought home a '84 Grand Wagoneer 4 weeks back, already pulled and cleaned the fuel tank so waiting for parts to put back on, but MSD-6A does not test out and no power from IGN wire. Hence, no spark to fire it up.

            • Chasing wires......

Found some questionable wiring (duct taped connections, MSD soldered into electric choke circuit, voltage dropping out of IGN on feed) but closer now than this morning.

Getting out of the heat for a bit, then back at it

I think the duct tape is factory.

Check the ignition switch under dash on steering column. I have had the metal tabs that hold them together relax and cause problems.

                    • Interesting.....as the truck has sat for, close as we can figure, 18 yrs.

Hit it again last night for 4 hrs, added to the morning 6 hrs, then again this morning.

Having trouble getting full 12+ volts to the passenger side, which seems the most we can get is just 9+ a little, and no voltage to the coil.

We did determine that is next step, to do exactly as you just advised, so that is my homework for the week.

Thanks, and please throw any other tips this way, as I could use them

Start switch is so far up on the column, I need to drop the under dash A/C unit down, so I can access it to clean/tighten connections. Hope this clears up voltage drop in the engine bay.

Took out MSD system, went back to OEM with ECM/coil, and still the same readings.

                      • The drivers side air duct comes off separate from the rest of the unit. Sometimes loosening the 2 bolts that hold column bracket to dash helps. While under the dash look up at the back of the instrument panel, your 84 will have an Amp meter. Check to see if the 2 large main feed wires are on the SAME lug. If they are on separate lugs then the Amp meter might be part of the problem. There have been stories about them burning Jeeps down.
We should be doing this on your build thread...

                          • Pulled all the window parts and electric wiring out of two used but without rust and completely straight front doors to have them prepped for blasting and painting.

The original doors of the 73' j4000 are to far gone on the bottom side.
The drivers side was never a straight door when I started thirteen years ago and had removed and shaved the lock from passengers side door.
But it's was not always very practical
So now the truck is totally disassembled for a second overhaul it's time to replace what i don't like anymore or is rusted out to much.
Also going to put electric windows on the truck because it's way easier to pull the passenger window down from the driver's seat without stopping.
