  • Got Step Side Fever Today

I found this 83 J 10 step side on Craigs List last week, went and looked at it and tried to talk myself out of it for 3 days. I finally broke down last night and told the guy I would take it. Towed it home today and will start on it tomorrow. It was a Texas truck so the rust is not too bad, got to get some primer on the body where the PO had started working on it. The T177 is bad and I will be pulling the top plate off tomorrow to see what I have. Engine starts right up and has good oil pressure, some smoke on start up.

The wife is pissed because I brought this J 20 home last month.

              Hello Jim,

Nice find! Glad to see you could not resist, and saved another one...

How are the fiberglass fenders? They are probably the hardest parts to replace if needed.

              Enjoy

There are some cracks at the bottom but overall they look good. I need to get some sealer on them ASAP.

I did talk him down some so it was not too bad. The engine starts right up and has a new Holley 2V on it. I don't see anything wrong in the trans after pulling the top plate off. I did see the spacer between the trans and transfer case has been welded on. Also the bellhousing has been welded up in places.

As I posted over on FSJN, the sound is most likely due to the t-case being part way into neutral. That would explain the sound changing as you shift. And would be why everything in the trans looks fine. See if you can move the t-case linkage manually and get it to grab.

Found the input splines to the transfer case stripped, DANGIT!

Me either, I did find where the trans to transfer case adaptor had been welded up and the bellhousing too. This thing must of been beat on pretty hard.
