  • The Woodgrain Comparison ...

As we all know the original "Di-Noc" stuff is hard to get and so there are some replacements in the market.
If you are interested in buying some woodgrain the best way is to order a sample because the reproductions differ in color, woodgrain and gloss.
However I would have been glad to see some pictures before to have an idea of what is interesting or not.

So this might be a help for others:
(Please have in mind that the foto does not show the
real color. Read my comments on this)

    Phonixx G. Cherry Oak:

    - thickness and gloss like original
    - woodgrain not original but good looking
    - not compared to original chery but to light for marine teak

    Phonixx G. Marine Teak:

    - thickness and gloss like original
    - woodgrain not original but good looking
    - darker as original but acceptable

    From left to right:

    Auto Trim Design "Marine Teak":

    - thickness and gloss like original
    - woodgrain original and good looking (digital reprint)
    - much darker as original and ugly green shine

    Stripeman "Marine Teak":

    - thinner and less gloss like original
    - woodgrain original and good looking (digital reprint)
    - darker as original but good looking

    Stripeman "Walnut":

    - thinner and less gloss like original
    - woodgrain not original but good looking
    - the color is different but matches somehow

    Auto Trim Design "Chery Oak":

    - thickness and gloss like original
    - woodgrain original and good looking (digital reprint)
    - darker as original but matches much better as on the foto (compared to Marine Teak!)

    Different view:

    For the moment:

My favorites are Auto Trims "Chery Oak" (precut) also as replacement for original "Marine Teak" and Stripemans
    "Marine Teak".
But all replacements are far away from the original stuff.

I hope to receive the samples from Metro Redesign next week. So let´s wait and see.

    Greetings,
    Gunnar

    Gunnar-

Very nice...thanks for posting this. Short of an exact match, it'd be nice to see the Cherry Oak "grain", with the Stripemans color.

      Di-Noc

Now, we need to see also Metro Restyling's Di-Noc.
I ordered samples of both marine and cherry, but I have feeling it will come without being laminated. (You have to pay extra and special order for laminate.)

      Crist, any thoughts?

There is also a guy in Florida (Hileah, I believe) named Nelson who does pre-cut kits. He uses a digital, not sure who from.

        A man on a mission!

Nice resourcing work Gunnar! I appreciate the effort it takes. I can remember my samples draped all-over my GW. So I had to chuckle when I first read and viewed this post... A familiar experience!

Backing up a bit... Why are you replacing your wrap? As it looks good in the photographs. Are you replacing the trim also?

        Just me being curious...

what did you decide to go with?
the problem definitely is the trim?
            Has anyone tried "renewing" existing?

                Hello,
thank you for all your replys.

                @ Rich88: Phoenixx means www.phoenixgraphix.com .

Unfortunately "stripeman" did not send the chery oak within the sample set
and I´m not willing to order complete sheet due to costs.
The same problem was with Phoenix Graphix. You have to order: No email contact, no phonenumber, no samples.

As a real "stocker" I am not really happy with the look of any reproduction.
So my next try will be to remove all dents from the doors by a dent doctor.
Some minor damage will be filled and painted with a small brush.
The total condition of my woodgrain is fortunately not so bad.

                Greetings,
                Gunnar

I came to the same conclusion. No fading and minimal imperfections on mine. And although there may be a good replacement for the flat woodgrain panels... I have never seen a non-obvious replacement/re-application of the woodgrain trim.

The challenge then became/becomes finding someone who would paint my GW with the woodgrain/trim on. After a long search... I found a restoration guy that did it. But he said he would never do another one!

So here comes part 2 of my comparison:

We see from left to right

                    - Metro Restyling "Chery Teak"
                    - Metro Restyling "Marine Teak"
                    - Sharpline Converting Inc. "Marine Teak" top
                    - Sharpline Converting Inc. "Chery Oak" bottom

Sharpline "Marine Teak" (top) is a digital reproduction.
It has gloss, good woodgrain but wrong color and the foil is very thin but
                    supplied by 3M.

Sharpline "Chery Oak" (bottom) is lighter and also don´t work as a replacement for OEM "Marine Teak".
                    Same material as above.

Metro Restyling "Marine Teak" is an actual 3M Dinoc product.
Nice matching color with similar woodgrain.
Very high quality foil, very strong but no gloss and grained surface.
However this is a really nice way to go!

This is Metro Restyling "Chery Teak", also a 3M Dinoc Foil (as above).
The "Chery" is to light as a "Marine Teak" replacement but might work for
                    earlier years.

                    Finally my favority:

                    OEM 3M Dinoc from Jeep/Chrysler

Hope this helps to make your decision

                    Greetings,

Thanks again Gunnar! So you were able to purchase OEM 3M Dinoc from Jeep/Chrysler? If so, where did you get it? I thought I was the only one who has an original roll!

WOW ! That OEM 3M Dinoc is like the holy grail for us marine teak folks, where on Earth did you get it (insert DROOL smiley here)? Great information here; this comparison is priceless and should probably be a sticky. Thank you for doing all this hard work for us!

I would not be too quick to judge any of these colors. If you think they are good quality. Rather, I would first decide what color paint I was going with.

The Marine teak looks fabulous on my Metallic green. But If I had a copper colored or maroon colored waggie I might want some of the other tints. If your eye picked up hints of the paint color in the trim it would ...Sing together in harmony I agree I hope someone comes up with a more accurate reproduction trim.

                          Breathe...be creative.

Ach du Liebe! Was Kostet die letzte Rolle' You did a very thorough job and I think this should be a sticky posty for permanent reference so everyone can see the different tints as they are definately major color differences between them. Also major differences in gloss. Good Job!
