  • STRANDED - positive wire/post pulled out of alternator

I have a 1979 J20 with a '94 12v swapped in by the PO before the PO I got it from. There are so many hacks on here it'll make you sick, including pulling the stock fuse block only to install 2 on the driver's fender well and run red & black wires for every circuit front to back. Part of that leads to my being stranded at the moment. Electrical is an absolute nightmare to me and trying to read the diagrams and schematics gives me fits beyond. I am so infuriated at the moment I don't know of what to do. I have heard of one wire alternator set ups, but navigating fact from opinion, often 2 or 3 times removed, that I don't know if it's the best way to remedy this situation, or do I replace it with a stock unit. Either way the wiring is butchered so I'm floundering trying to figure out how to get it hooked up. It's probably the biggest reason why a 1 wire is utterly appealing. I can't find the external regulator that supposedly goes with the stock diesel alt.

Anybody got some crayons and a some Tab A into Slot B directions??

Maybe time to remove all wiring and start with a fresh aftermarket wiring harness!?
Or remove all bad connections and solder them and put some heat shrink wrap on.

For the alternator and wiring ,get a alternator with intern regulator or connect a regulator on the alternator you have.
For a schematic diagram have a look on the www , there is plenty of information to choose from.

Don't know if the 12 valve Cummins still has a electronic shut off solenoid!?
If it has one , remove it and make it a manually shut off mechanism.
