  • 1983 Jeep J10 Honcho 5.3 4L60E

Hey everybody I'm completely new to this website (and forums in general. Currently I have a 1979 Jeep J10 LWB (Orange) and a 1983 Jeep J10 Honcho SWB (tan). The Honcho is going to be the focus of this thread. Currently on the honcho, I am putting a 5.3 LS with a 4L60E out of a 2000's chevy truck into it. I am on a fairly tight budget (seeing as tho I'm only 15). I have the engine in, and the truck is up and running and driving. That is the basics of the truck and where it is right now.

As for the back story of the truck, I got it about a year and a half ago out of a local junkyard near me. We assume the truck was wrecked/rear ended at one point because it has been repainted and (we think) the bed has been replaced on it because the bed is super rusty, but the cab and front clip is super clean. I got it without a title, because the junkyard owner who had it never got the title from the previous people. So, we are in the process of getting a bonded title for it. I got the truck for $550 with a set of doors off of a wagoneer thrown in with the deal. The truck had a 360 with a 4 barrel and 3 speed auto in it, with 64,000 original miles, and the engine ran, but the transmission was giving out, and the engine bent pushrods like crazy because it sat for so long. So, since my dad had a 5.3 with a 4L60E and a NP241C with 73,000 miles sitting around, we thought about it a little bit and decided to put it in there. The swap actually turned out really well so far. We ordered some universal motor mounts for an LS swap (they weren't too expensive but still good quality), and with the motor mounts where we wanted them, we were actually able to reuse the original J10 transmission cross member and the silverado driveshaft, which saved me a LOT of money. We decided after a bit of contemplation that we are going to run the stock J10 radiator since it will save lots of money and time in fabricating. We also are using the original silverado exhaust manifolds. I haven't gotten it sent out to get the exhaust, which is next on my list which will happen sometime probably early march.

Now to the exterior. The truck has a three inch lift (from the previous owner). I have a set of 33x12.50s that I'm currently running on it, but they are super bald, so I'm going to look at getting a set of 33x10.50s when I get my next set. It doesn't have honcho stripes on it anymore, but one day while me and my brother were messing around, doing lord knows what, my brother noticed the stripes on the inside of the door (where the outer skin wraps around the door shell), and on the back of the fenders in the door jam. I have no idea why the owners wouldn't put the honcho stripes back on after it was painted, but to each their own I guess. Anyways, inside the cab is really clean. Sadly, some of the interior pieces are missing (seats, radio, some dash pieces, etc.). I am not completely sure what I am going to do for seats yet, so if you guys have any suggestions about that I'd be happy to hear them. The floors in the truck were really nice, with just a couple soft spots behind the rear brace in the cab where the trucks typically rust out. The doors are in fairly tough shape which is why I got the other set of doors with it. Sadly, the bed is too far gone to repair. If you guys have any deals on beds or interior, I'd be interested. Once again, I'm on a really tight budget so coming up with the money to by new bed stuff off of BJ's is out of the picture.

Ok wow, I know that was a lot, but I think that about sums up the truck. I'm sure I forgot some stuff here and there, but when I remember I'll make a new post.

SUPER awesome story!!! GREAT year truck, too! I love our original Pignose grills. Good on you for saving this guy! I can't wait to see some pictures of it.

Seats: Pretty much any seat from a 79 and earlier FSJ will bolt in. I would avoid Wagoneer seats though as they do not tilt forward (but will bolt in). Cherokee seats sometimes fold forward. If you get a 1980 or later seat, the passenger will bolt in but the driver side will need a bracket welded to make it work. I have heard some CJ seats will bolt in but I do not know much about that. If you and your dad are handy enough to get a 5.3/4L60E running, I am sure you can get a set of wrecking yard seats to installed.

Beds: Watch the classifieds on IFSJA. Also, I watch Craigslist daily for FSJ parts. You have to be pretty regular to see what things sell for and when something is a good deal. Sometimes people part out trucks and the bed will be for sale. BUT it will be relatively expensive and then shipping on top of that. Ebay is usually really $$$$ but you can usually find what you need.
This guy built his own bed and I think it is amazing
      http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=178651
I have also seen flat beds that were homemade that came out pretty nice too. The original tailgates to pretty much all J trucks are $$$$$$$$ so be wary of that. Hopefully yours is save'able.

Here some pointers on how to post pictures:

Be ware of the apostrophe bug on this forum. That basically means if you are posting from an apple product or a phone, sometimes the forum will cut everything off after the first apostrophe. it is the worlds most this side of a bolt that seized in a block and broke when you were trying to remove it.

Thanks for the info rang-a-stang, just so everyone knows, I'm not sure if it was unclear or not, but I'm doing the 1983 honcho first. Regarding the seats, I was planning on taking the seat out of the 1979 j10 and putting it in the 1983 j10, but from what you said, it sounds like the brackets are different after 1980? I know a lot of stuff changed after 1979, so is this also one of the things? I will probably just customize the brackets if so, so it's not a big deal, I'm just wondering. Thanks for your input.

That's right. The floors are 79 and earlier or 80 and later. If your 79 has a bench seat, that should fit across all years. Again, if you can do an LS swap in your truck you can easily make the 79 bucket seats fit in your 83. If you go here:
          My thread, page 17
scroll down about half way and you will see what I did to make 80+ seat rails fit in my 79. You would do the opposite to make 79 seats fit in an 80+.

When I click on the links for your pictures it asks me to sign in/sign up. I then get a page with the picture title at the bottom but no picture. it might just be my server though...

Ok dang it's been a while since I've been on here. I heard bj's bought the platform so I decided to stop back over here. The website appears much more user friendly so far. Anyways, my truck is looking a lot different nowadays. I have the engine swap done and have driven it to town and back once. I am now working on making patch panels for my bed. It is almost done. Next I will prep my doors, fenders, and tailgate to be sandblasted. I'm going to prime the whole truck pretty soon. I will post up pics sometime soon.

link to photo of my bed repair. I used my dads break and some 20 gauge metal to form these. Then I used an airsaw to cut out the angle for the flare.
                https://www.dropbox.com/s/kv1ntqb377...47.43.jpg?dl=0
Then using the cutoff wheel and airsaw I cut out behind where the patch was, leaving a 3/4 inch overlap. We used panel bonding adhesive to join the pieces after I primed the back side of the new piece and ground the edge of the metal on both so it was metal on metal. We repeated this on all 4 corners of the bed.

I'm hoping to maybe get a burnout video this summer .

Here is an updated link to my photos.

Over the past couple weeks, I acquired a 80-86 ford stepside bed. All ford and chevy beds of the era were 6.5 feet long, so they are the correct length for our short bed trucks. Me and my dad set the bed on (using a cherry picker since it is not super light). It originally was way too high in the back because the cross member of the bed was sitting on the rear frame cross member. So, we decided to cut the rear cross member off the frame and shortened the frame about 4 inches,. We will re-mount the cross member once we get the frame shortened to the correct length. Then, after the frame was shortened, the bed was still too high in the rear because the cross member of the bed was sitting on the rear frame rails, so we cut off part of the inside of the cross member, which can be seen in my pictures. I also removed the braces and ribs of the bed floor to make it easier to work on it. Now, the bed is sitting about exactly where I want it, the front just needs to come down about a 1/4 inch.
