  • Hi there Al. The engine bottom obviously had work done to it. Why I have one odd ball piston is beyond me. Must have been my Dad's depression upbringing. I ordered new rings and rod bearings. The crank looked okay and the bearings were pretty good. One exception was a rod journal that looked iffy. 2000 grit emery cloth made it fine! The corresponding rod bearing was shot. Looked like it had been sitting in sour oil for several years. Which is entirely possible.
Have new rings coming so I honed the cylinders out and for the most part look great. A couple of spots look okay but will work. New timing chain and sprockets also on the way. I found reman heads with hardened seat for right at $650 each here: https://www.jegs.com/c/Engines-Compo...10175/10002/-1

Frank, you might want to make a phone call and see what these guys say. http://cylinderheadexchange.com/ I can't believe any shop would rebuild a head nowadays without hardened seats. That's just begging for warranty work. I think I paid them $300 for a pair exchanged...

Nice work btw. The truck is looking good.

      • My machinist said the reason the older heads are more expensive is because they have to machine out the older softer head material, install the seat, then machine the new seat material. The newer heads already have hardened seats and only need (generally) to be re-machined. So, typically, a newer head may only need one seat completely replaced, while the older heads need all 16.

            • Yes the paint is really cool. Love the color. You might read the reviews on ATK. I don't want to be a buzz kill Frank, but they have some pretty big issues. I just read up today looking for a Mercruiser boat motor long block.
Bkilby I think has a good solution on house O cylinder heads there. Geez the pictures showed at least a million of them. Hopefully it is not to late....

Al, I can't find the reviews you referring. Got a link. No too late yet.

                • Received the timing chain set today. But I have a problem. The dots do not line up. Yes I move the crank and cam but no matter how I do it the dots are off by a set of chain teeth. Any ideas?

Way to many bad reviews everywhere. Save your money for a company that does good work. Your Jeep deserves it.

Can you verify the manufacturer and their part number by trying to order it somewhere else. Not to purchase, just to verify the number. Be sure to get a double roller. Stock chains get pretty wore out and loose by 30K.

Some good reading here. I might need to contact Cloyes for a custom timing chain for my 224 CI Mercruiser timing chain. It is not available.

Now that really sucks. Fortunately I found several other suppliers. Unfortunately as I was getting ready to coat the exhaust manifold I found the left one cracked!!

Guess I typed too soon. Once I got everything ready to install it worked out just fine. All 8 slugs back in their holes. bottom end buttoned up.

Called Cylinder Head Exchange. They dont have heads to exchange but will rebuild mine for 175 a head plus valves if they have to be replaced. I am just terrified of what shipping to So Cal is going to be!!

Todd we are headed to Yuma via Salt Lae and Camp Verde, AZ for special and Jan.
Not sure I want to come back until April but Faye says she is going skiing.
Oh as far as the heads are concerned I started adding stuff up. CHE was with out valves that needed to be replaced. Without shipping for my heads down and back. So i ordered heads from RockAuto. $329 a head but that includes shipping of the new head and return of my core, and a $25 core charge. In the long run much more convenient for me. Unfortunately for me they only have one in stock! So I ordered one and said tell me when you have another.

Then after I cleaned up the exhaust manifolds I found the left side was cracked. Cracked so badly that when I threw that SOB on my shop floor it broke into 2 pieces. :
Found a replacement on EBay for $50. Should be here in a couple of days.

Anybody know where I can find a cheap Buick 4 barrel intake manifold?

Really starting to understand how one can bleed to death with nickel and dime wounds!
