Heater Core Repacement 87 Grand Wagoneer

I did a search of the forums for this topic but did not find anything. I am in the middle of an air conditioning repair job and I need to repair an A/C hose with a crimp. It would make it easier to get to if I removed the heater core box, so I figured this would be a good time to replace the heater core. I have a 1984 factory service manual and it says you just have to remove the nuts holding the box to the firewall and it should come right off. I did that and the box does not want to come off. Before I start forcing it I want to make sure I didnt miss anything else holding the box on.

Any guidance? Thanks in advance!

There is a guy on E.bay that sells the copper heater cores and evaporator cores for $100.00. I bought a evap core last week it is beautiful, way better than that aluminum crap.

Can you send a link to that Ebay seller? I bought a replacement heater core and you're right, it looks kind of cheap.

Also, I did a little more searching around about how to get that heater core box off and I think there may be two additional nuts or bolts that need to be removed that are accessed from inside the car, behind the A/C box. Can anybody confirm or deny this? I'm leaning toward not replacing the heater core now that I'm learning this since it's not leaking or blocked right now, but I will have to do it someday so I would like to know for sure.

Yeah, you'll have to drop the AC housing under the dash to get at them, or at least I did.

Bummer.

Is there any way to separate the housing under the hood and extricate the heater core?

Pretty sure the whole thing needs to come out to split the housing.
Dropping the A/C housing wasn't a big deal. Contorting my body to reach the nuts under the dash was the worst part.

Note that all Four Seasons AC evaporators are all Aluminum despite pictures showing them to be copper. I ordered one from Team Grand Wagoneer several months ago baed on picture showing copper tubing. I got an all aluminum one and sent it back complaining that their website was wrong. I believe they changed picture and now show all aluminum ones. They work but you have to be careful not to over tighten them and damage the flares.

My evaporator came in today and it is Copper. Will send pic tomorrow. bschaetz (9834).on Ebay. There are two bolts under the dash, you'll have to drop the AC housing to get access to them,
