Well not to be rude but you can beleive what ever you want. When I installed mine the set up ran great for a week and then a huge bang came from under my hood on the highway and the car wouldn't start. Took it to the mechanic and he put in a match set of gear and new timing chain. I have the chewed up cam gear somewhere if you want me to see if i can get a pic of it.

But it ended up costing me 900 bucks (I had him redo my brakes at the same time so that is part of the cost) and the reason I didnt switch gears was because I read on a forum where someone said they "didn't believe" in that myth.

Don't Swap the gears at your own risk [end rant]

thisguy - nor do I mean to be rude

I think there are other factors involved that cause gear failure. These are some that come to mind:
  • depending on the manufacturer tolerances of the new replacement distributor - alignment issue
  • some dizzys are installed without a bushing between the gear and housing - alignment issue
  • some replacement gears are inferior - failure
  • worn out timing chain - slappety slap on the cam, dizzy gear set
I know I am not immune to this type of failure. I am saying I have never shredded one driving FSJs since 1976 and Ramblers since 1969.

HaHa! I told the Fire Mgmt Officer that our network infrastructure was very realiable and forcast no failures through the meanest drought year hear in 2002. The 2600 acre fire we had at Mesa Verde shortly after that burnt out a mile and a half of Qwest phone line on the poles. SNAP! No Internet for a few days.

I managed a project the next spring to get 5 miles of new cable and fiber in separate conduit buried along the highway corridor. Um, needed to reduce my risk.

i too have swapped distributors willy-nilly time and again with no troubles.

the issue with "new" gears is they're not the same hardness, usually harder than the cam gear, and thus they chew it up.

use factory gears, toss that "new" gear in the trash. the matched gears are matched in hardness.

lemme add to the horror of dealing with procomp. i ordered a dizzy for a 351 p.i. crown vic im using as a stock car from a authorized dealer on ebay. the thing came with the wrong gear, had a gear for a modified not a windsor. i called procomp directly since it wasnt the dealers issue. first they sent me the identicle gear, but in brass or bronze. i called again, then they sent me A BLANK GEAR THAT I WAS SUPPOSED TO MACHINE MYSELF. all i really needed was the center of the gear, the drive portion. the third time i called i was pissed. after 45 minutes of trying to explain it to some that didnt believe me and was telling me all the other ones in the "warehouse" have the same gear id had enough and told him iwanted a manager. he laughed and hung up on me. i called back same answers, i said hey i said give me your manager. hung up on me again. third time someone else answered and said he was a mamager i explained what i needed to him and he actually knew what i was asking for. took me 3 weeks to finally get the right part thru them. now i only use davis unified.

Resurrecting an old thread

So, I ordered a ProComp HEI the other day on eBay. $99.95 shipped w/ cut to fit wires. Then I read this thread this morning, preparing for an install this afternoon. I have to say, I was a bit worried after reading this. And my few initial tries didn't give me a warm fuzzy. Luckily I noted that the stock dizzy was pointing to #8 before I removed it. So knowing that was the next order, I just got it to fit good, and then set the cap in place, noting which post the rotor was pointing too. That was my new #8. New AutoLite Plat's gapped at .045 and a few hours of crimping plug wires later... Fired up on the first crank. I didn't set the advance just yet, b/c now I have to pull it back out to make room to pull the intake for a Performer install this weekend. Just taking a step at a time, so I don't try to crank after doing it all, and wonder is it the carb or the ignition. At least now I know the ignition is good to go. Of course, I have to find a switched +12V, as my last one was fed of the alternator so I had to cut it to stop the dieseling effect.
