What did I break?

Here's the situation:

Stuck in mud like wet concrete - gas pedal to the floor - engine is really straining hard in 4LO to spin the wheels.
I hear a loud bang and see my left front wheel stop moving - I let off the gas
floor it again and everything turns like it should for a few seconds then it happens again. The same thing happened several more times that day.
At first I was sure something broke but if the strain is not too much everything seems to pull OK. It happens only when I go into some deep mud.

My first guess is the front Quick Lok (same as EZ Locker) - max recommended tire size is 32" and I'm running 37's - I think the teeth are sliding over each other. I pulled the diff. cover and there were a few very small metal shavings but no broken parts and everything looks OK.

Is it possible the t-case chain is jumping over the sprockets?

What do you guys think?

Possible

It could be the locker disengaging & engaging. Especially unber load it would pop. I hate it when they do that. One wheel binds & the other wheels isn't getting any grip will cause that.

If you can't make it better why waste your time. No use repeating the orignal mistakes. I'm to old to push it that's why.

i had this happen on my wag. similar scenario, 4lo, rpms maxed, climbing a steep sand hill. ended up being the cardan joint on the front shaft. the stabilizer ball busted. if you crawl under your rig, grab the front shaft and see if there is play left to right.

sound to me like a broke locking hub or your locker is crap (most likely) the fix would be toss it and install an aussie or spartian locker. im not bashing your stuff but those lockers arent well known for holing up long due to soft metals.

Sounds to me like A hub. I would start on the outside and work your way in, If it were the Tcase then it wouldnt stop 1 tire from turning, it would disengauge both. If your running A 44 front on 37s with A locker then the hub acts like A fuse, generaly the weakest link, and the easiest to repair. I might be wrong on my thinking but its definatly easier to start from the hub and work your way in.

When I was running A 10 bolt front on 38s up front, I had A spare set of hubs in the rig. There really easy to replace.

I'll bet you sheered some teeth off of your front differential. Works fine till it gets to the section with the missing teeth....

i doubt that's his problem but i have seen a hub crack the drive gear and it just let it jump splines under load.
i had to make a puller to remove it cause it was jammed into the wheel hub.

That doesn't exactly match what he's saying is happening. Just like broken teeth doesn't match. I've broke teeth & you'll know when that happens. & it doues drive ok after that. The only hub I ever broke did split & under load it out make a wierd sound but not a pop after it broke. You could just hear the splines stripping out more.

pull your hubs and report!
just a question, did you buy a new cross shaft when you put the "quick lock" in? this is the #1 problem with all lunchbox lockers!
