bumper second guessing...what

I know, opinions are like.. well, fill in the blank.

I am in the process of recovering “Jeep Funds” to continue my WT GW. At the moment, all I can do is sit and stare and admire it.. But the more i look at it, the more i am second guessing the plans I had for it..

I planned on putting a customized version of the BJ Crawler bumpers on it. I want (ed) a rear swing out tire carrier on it along with a winch bumper with driving lights.. The more I look at it (and am still amazed it is in my garage) I am beginning to think a clean set of plain black bumpers might be a better route.

I do require a 2” hitch on the back as i intend to eventually tow a car trailer with one of the baby jeeps or a reasonable camper with it.

It won’t see real trails at this point, but will get my YJ mutt to the camp ground or trail head. The reality is that I am beginning to think the thing is just too nice to put big bumpers and a large roof rack on.

So, if it were sitting in your driveway, what bumpers would you put on her?

Right this moment, I am between the original plans and a set of black smooth bumpers like on the mid-70’s rigs..
What would you put on it?

The wheels will be changed..those are just rollers i had from my 2500hd for the J20 axles.

I really like how you blackened the stainless window trim And grill as well.
My vote goes for black stock bumpers.

If it were me, I would put the stock bumpers just because I already have a set. Drive it and if it just doesn't do it for you, spend the money and get the others.
Thing is Bad-@ss! No way it would ever see the mud if it were mine.

I say (don't gasp) stock 1 piece bumper from a later rig but blacked out. Razors look great with a one piece.

BUTTTTTT.... It is hard to find WT 1 piece bumper.

I keep looking at pics of the one-piece smooth bumpers. I bet finding a WT one would be a challenge. I seem to recall one of the members that did a street/strip rig used a flipped bumper from a GM truck? Or maybe I dreamed that.

So my original plan had the winch bumper on front, tire and fuel can carrier on the back, a nice stout drip rail mounted roof rack, and sliders/rocker guards. It would someday be my daily driver, with the ability to do some overlanding.

Now, shiny paint has spooked me from that plan. I am now thinking I will do some much less substantial sliders (just a little protection) and cleaner bumpers and leave the rest of the exterior clean. I still intend to daily drive it again someday, at least during the nicer seasons.

I just really like how clean the lines are and the paint really is something. I will probably shed a tear that first time it gets a rock chip. The black has a satin clear over it, according to the shop. I think I will have to tape it all off before waxing the body to insure I don't get any wax smeared on it.

Full Size Jeeper's advice is solid. If I can find smooth bumpers, paint black and run it until I wake up one day and decide it is time to go back to the original plan. I will have to come up with a plan for the spare tire. The fuel tank is in the original spot and a 33-34" tire/wheel would take up a ton of space in the back.

I think I have looked at every FSJ bumper on the intranet.. Some of you folks and those on the other forum have built some really nice examples.

.....and heavy axles. The lightly built SJ bodies and frames are prone to stress cracks. Adding unsprung weight will add more stress, even under normal driving conditions.

I would try to camouflage the modification as much as possible. I would do this by making it look as original as possible. The average "looker" will not fully appreciate what you have there. I would enjoy seeing the look on all the others faces when they begin to question what they are seeing.

Did you do the modification yourself? I would be interested in seeing some pictures of the process if they are available.
