Yeah, totally understand, I couldn't justify it (and I can normally justify a lot, lol) on a truck that I originally bought for $500-ish... the oven was $100 on craigslist and I spent another $15 on the 10/3 cable and the 220V plug plus a few moments understanding the wiring necessary to convert from a 4-wire hard-wired to a 3-wired plug-in setup. Powder coat gun from eastwood wasn't bad and now I can powdercoat whatever I want!

careful spraying it on heavy, it will run right off of there when it starts flowing out. ask me how I know.

You guys are lucky to have the set up's you have. Think how much you are saving in the long run. 4 wheels runs 200 and up here. Greg you have answered my questions. Don't worry about any more detail.

Holy cripes, it's been a while

Ok, so first things first, I GRADUATED MECHANICAL ENGINEERING! Last Saturday was completely surreal, standing with the guys and girls who I've been struggling with for 4 years, all in our caps and gowns. Phew. What a relief.

So, for some time, I've been contemplating how exactly I wanted to fabricate the bed of the truck. I've had, more or less, a general idea, but I've learned many times over that I need more than that if I want to avoid building things twice... That being said, my design for the truck bed looks like this.



And here's an exploded view of it so you can more or less see how it goes together.



The inspiration for getting this done NOW is that I needed the stand from the garage that was currently holding the fenders I'd painted the better part of 2 years ago. So I decided the best place for them to sit, temporarily, was on the tires of the truck.



Thought to myself, "Man, this silly little plywood truck bed has got to go, it simply doesn't do the truck justice (which is a pretty low bar considering all the work was done by ME... lol). Not to mention the fact, that with no fenders, I was perpetually terrified that I'd throw a rock through my back window.

Here's some of the pieces of 1 1/2 square tube cut and laid out.



Once I had that all done, I got out my square and my corner jig and started tacking them all together. The finished product is extremely solid.



Here it is mocked up in its new home, and then I couldn't help but mock up the fenders to try and get an idea of the proportions of the whole thing when it'll be done.







So now, I've got to get the measurements all made for how high off of the various parts of the frame the bed mounts need to be. It would've been great if I'd had a set of bed support rails handy, but I think what I've got in mind will be fine for now. Forgive me if I don't run a FEA (finite element analysis) stress study on the design for now. My brain hurts and I start work in a little over 2 weeks. So now I get to "play" for a little bit...

I'll post more soon, I'm sure there will be widely varying opinions on the finished product, lol.

You got your ME in 4 years?! Wow! That's impressive! I know an ME is considered a 4 year degree but of the probably 30 engineers we have hired since I have been here, 20'ish of them were MEs and only one got her degree in 4 years. Everyone else takes 5. Good on you!!!

I think your design looks great and will compliment your truck well. Do you know what wood you would use for the sides? What is the bed bottom made of? It looks like you have a plywood base with some sort of cover over it.

Some ideas (I won't offended if you use none of them, feel free to laugh):
1) make sure you make a way to tie stuff down. Some pad eyes on the top or bottom, somewhere, maybe? But the way it is now, if you throw a suitcase, cooler, or box in there, its going to slide around and scratch up the wood and possibly come out.
2) are you going to run a tailgate? if so, you will probably need to add some more structure to the back to hold it.
3) I would also add more strength to sides where the fenders will bolt on. As you drive down the road, they will wiggle and could crack your welds.
4) You should make a spare tire mount somewhere before you install your bed. Whether that is under the bed or on the side of the bed (my vote is for the side of your bed, forward of the driver side fender) it would be much easier to incorporate it into your design before you get much further.

Congrats on the degree. I have been MIA for a while with other crap but the your Jeep is looking good. Your bed design is kind of how I designed the bed for my 4700 International truck. I wanted it t look like an old step side bed.

You may want to put your final wheel and tire choice on the truck before you finalize the bed. The offset and tire size may change things a little...

Did I mention this is a slow build?

I think Al gets more done before sunrise on Sadie than I get done in a month on my truck at this point.

So I've made a little more progress on the bed.

Here are the wooden pieces installed on a trial basis.







There are three 1-1/2"x1/8" flat bar pieces that go on the outside of the bed and the panel of the bed is sandwiched between these.






I scored the flat bar to get it to bed in the right spot and I'll go behind and provide some reinforcement on these spots after I get everything all mocked up by welding a bead on the seam where I scored the metal and also building a gusset for the corner and welding these at all three points. I think this will be really aesthetically pleasing as well. I'm also going to wire wheel all the rust off of these pieces and paint them black, but only after I finish the fitment assembly. While I'm painting everything, I'm also going to final sand and seal the wood to hopefully bring out more of the grain, which is way prettier than can be seen in these pictures. Should be pretty sweet, if I do say so myself. And I do.

The sun set on work today and I'm feeling like this truck is fiiiiiinally getting to where I want it to be for the forseeable future.


More soon. Hope to have the sides finished by the end of the weekend with fenders and floor mounted for a trial fit. The floor is then getting rhino lined and I have to build the bulkhead piece. EXCITING!

Thanks Bailey! I'm actually using oem wheels like these and some stock size tires, just mud terrains with an older chunky looking tread profile. Can't wait to get the pizza cutters on this thing. I think it'll ride a lot better too!

I'm going to do a 3/4" plywood base with a pretty heavy gauge corrugate galvanized steel panel. I'm going to make some long wooden pieces to slide under the higher ridges so they don't get crushed in.

1) On my flat bed, I had some big eye screws through the bed of it. I'm planning on doing something like this on this bed but mounted to the steel frame of the bed and not just through the wood. Either this, or I'm going to do something that can fold down, similar to a lot of modern trucks. I really want to be able to use the bed and use it often.

2) The back is actually exceptionally sturdy, although when I make a tailgate, you're probably right, so I'll have to address that at some point. Fortunately the whole bed unbolts pretty easily for this reason exactly. I'm planning on making the tailgate out of some 2-by and having the Jeep logo water-jetted in sheet steel for a template I can use to route it into the tailgate.

3) I'm still trying to figure out how I can add more strength to the sides without intruding into the bed area so that I don't compromise the truck's ability to do simple Home Depot runs for things like plywood. I might figure a way to use a low profile C-channel piece instead of the flat bar there just to strengthen the area a little bit more.

4) I REALLY wanted to do the spare tire on the side of the bed on the passenger side. I may still put it there, but it will most likely have to go on the inside of the bed. I would hate to have it flex the wood side though. The other option is that I could mount it in the front of the bed off to the side, like an old international. I think either one of those would be pretty cool. The bulkhead idea would allow me to mount it to steel and reinforce it while not letting the reinforcement be visible. I'll keep you all posted, of course.

We got really lucky with hurricane/tropical storm Barry. We did lose power, as a branch fell in our lines about 10:30 Saturday AM, caught on fire and blew up the transformer... Our friends' kids were out of town and they invited us to utilize their fridge and freezer for our perishables, so we packed up the dogs and took Bruce (the big nasty F250 that shows up in some of my pictures... 650k on the original engine and counting) over there. Cooked some great food and made the most of it.

Again, thanks for the congrats. I'm enjoying myself thoroughly these days!
