FSJ and cash for clunkers

How many FSJs will end up in the scrap pile under the cash for clunker program? I have to admit I looked at my $500 GW which has been registered for more than one year and with a average 11 MPG making it eligible for the $4500 incentive. I thought about getting a small pickup like a Ranger or Mazda (same same) four cylinder getting 22 MPG avg thus I could get the $4500 discount. Then I thought with the amount I drive my Jeep that would buy about 1 1/2 - 2 years worth of fuel plus the $200 plus per month payment I would be saving, Of course my 88 GW is being very evil and turning the planet into a charcoal burquet about 7,000,000,000,000 years sooner than expected but what the hey!

I can't think of any new truck I would rather have for the price. I'm hoping to go my entire life without a car payment, so new vehicles are not my thing.

I really really hate the Cash for Clunker program. They even destroy the engines by running them with sodium silicate in them.

Because it's totally better for the planet to use resources building a brand new car and driving it across the ocean in a giant freighter that pollutes as much as 50 million cars (http://gas2.org/2009/06/03/one-conta...-million-cars/) than it is keeping an older less efficient model running. Yup.

I think a lot of FSJs will meet their demise under this plan, not to mention all sorts of other good old vehicles.

I hate to sound like an elitist, but if you're questioning your love for your FSJ, maybe you should trade it in. I didn't buy my Wagoneer for the MPG, I bought it because it's like comfort food, it reminds me of a time when things were simpler. If I want MPG's I'll ride my motorcycle.

IF I had the money, I would get a Ford Raptor, wouldn't even wait for the 400hp 6.2l engine. I don't think I would qualify for $4500 though if I got a Raptor.....if I had $40k I could get a couple houses........I guess I'll keep dumping money into the GW . It's got a hold on me.

oldest model year to qualify will be 1984...and in my book at that craptacular hybrid computer controlled carbs that they installed in GM, FORD and Chrysler need to be removed....i had a 86 cherokee that had some whacked carb that was computer controled...needed a new one due to failing emmissions and was told it would run around $550...

i applaud folks that want to get a newer car with a trade in under this...it will help lots of folks to get a larger trade in value than they normally could...my two vehicles do not qualify due to age...

just my two cents....

The people that this program affects will mostly do harm. They're trading in perfectly good cars and taking on more debt.

The only people I see helping are older folks who buy cars new cash and drive them for 15+ years until they drop, then start over again.

It does help the automotive industry, but by putting Americans in more debt. How about they build cars people want to buy? Is it really that hard?

The only way I'd even remotely consider that 4,500 credit is if it was twards the purchase of a shiny new M1 Abrams tank. I love my gas guzzling tank of an FSJ she's like a woman there are days you just wanna spend hours with her and then there are days you wish she would just go away. But I guess thats why we Love em so much.

My 87 would qualify, but no way no how wouuld it ever get turned in for this program, the Wife's 94 S-blazer just makes the MPG requirement, and Mopar says they are doubling the cash, so I was thinking 4dr wrangler, but I would still end up with a payment, not going to happen.

I work at a Toyota dealership here in Austin. We have a parking lot full of clunkers. While driving into the parking lot I saw a Jeep TJ with clunker wrote on the windshield. Looked bone stock and in great shape...how sad, so many good parts on it.

I was agitated today driving down "dealership row" in Wichita, and seeing cars stacked in dumpsters with flashy signs to promote it. One was a little Cherokee.

Well, I for one, am using this program with my old ... "iron"

Can't help it, it just had to be done.. dam economy....

Chrysler has the odasity to make me buy a mini van I really can't afford...

But, they are MATCHING the $4500 dollars.. that is $9,000 off !

However, like all goverment programs, they are making it studid hard for the dealer with all the rules, proof, destruction of the turn ins....

Been trying to get the new van since last Thurs !!

Oh, before you sacrafice me, I am trading in my 1999 - 5.9 Dodge conversion van I've driven for many years....

you should save it, my friend told me about this today, b/c his friend is going to do it with his 91 POS honda accord, im not a huge fan of new cars today, with all the electronics and evap system, jus makes everything so much more complicated when tryin to work with them, i know from experience with my wrangler, so i dont think i would have the heart to let something so bad @$$ die like that,

Can't once it is taken in for the CfC program it must be destroyed or the dealer will have a 15,000 fine.

I just sold my old money pit of a junk jeep and got a nice fancy (everthing works) new suv and don't have care in the world..

yea right.

the fact is that most of these rigs are too old for the programe and, lets face it a car/truck payment is just as much of a money pit (monthly payments). At least I get to shop for my parts and don't have to worry that the dealer is ripping me off just to tell me that the light on the dash means I need more washer fluid (dealer only item).
