how to bypass ignition

On my jeep the lock cylinder is missing so Ive been turning the ignition with a screwdriver. The problem is when I turn the ignition with the screwdriver I don't know if its in the on, off, or start position because it spins and spins and spins. I need to know how to bypass the ignition entirely and install a push button start. Its not running and hasn't been running in years so I'm wanting to start it.

Actually you can just buy a replacement lock from BJ's or any other source for IIRC 20-25 bucks

pull the steering wheel off ( you will need 2 pullers you can rent from NAPPA) and swap it out

it has been covered many times here - search old threads...after searching I can send Ya some pics of what the insides look like as you work your way into the column...

a two hour job - start to finish with many beer breaks...

darn....i dont remember ...

but if i recall it does not matter? just yank the old one out , the new one will only slide in one way...and the alignment problem should take care of itself?

or maybe I'm the tweeker

BTW I replaced the one in my waggie recently and had it rekeyed the same as my wranglers...presto one key for both rigs

Turning the key moves a rod that goes down the steering column to the ignition switch.

Did mine in about an hour or so. A steering wheel puller and a tool to depress the horn plate is needed. The new cylinder should align with a little jiggling if its not in the off position

It'll be in the off position when it slides out, won't go out any other way IIRC.

I was thinking run position?

I had a bad rod in one truck. I just unscrewed the elec switch off the base of the column and let it hang. I kept a small screwdriver in the clutter-catcher and just slid the switch. Worked like this for over a year, but I lived in a very small town and didnt go far with it.

You could change the whole column in an hour, I put one in out of a 73 Impala, any GM will work, bolts and plugs right up, good time to upgrade with a tilt column. 20 bucks at my local salvage yard, but me a regular custumer.

It could be the on position, last one I replaced was in 98 or 99. I know there's only one sweet spot where it'll come out tho.
