Using 4.0 head on 258 block with aw4 trans?

So I curious about using a 4.0 liter head on the 258, but use the Jeep AW4 transmission.

Here are my questions:
1. can the ECU be used individually from the body harness of a FSJ?
2. Upon reading an AW4 swap thread I was confused since everyone was mentioning the 360 flexplate and 4.0 liter starter .
Can I just use the standard Motorcraft starter and 258 flexplate if I do this swap?

all answers are greatly appreciated.

You can use the 4.0 flex and everything will be golden...
I believe that the ECU is separate, but the AW4 will also have its own ECU that you will want also.

The V8s are all externally balanced, meaning they require a harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate balanced for that specific engine. The I6s are all internally balanced and require neutrally balanced parts. Use whichever flexplate matches your engine. If you want to run the AW4 you will need to run the flexplate for it (4.0L plate). You will also need to run the mitsubishi starter to match that flexplate.

As far as the head...makes no difference as far as the transmission. As Jeff said the AW4 trans is separate from the engine PCM. There are, however, some sensors from the main engine harness that tie into the trans computer. Things like the TPS, speed sensor, etc. These give the trans computer triggers for things like shift points, kick down, etc.
